Most likely your account is linked with the wife's already but still.
I'd try adding a 2nd new number to her account instead of deleting the primary number...

You shouldn't have any issues receiving the passcode through GV texting.
But if you need to change the phone number, it shouldn't be an issue.
Are you NOT receiving the passcode through txt?
