You only need to worry about the SSN if you have a US paypal account. From what youre saying it sounds like you have an Indian paypal account (with an Indian address and bank account) so you don't need to worry about the SSN - obviously.
According to regulations in the US any account that received more than 20,000 in a given year needs to report and paypal will ask for the SSN if the account has reached that or is projected to reach it. I don't know if you there is a similar regulation in India - that is something youll need to find out by calling in or reading through the ToS for your specific account and the country it is registered in.

Nope, the OP is a student in the USA trying to use paypal USA.
At one point he was using his Mother's bank account on paypal too. Maybe not for this account.

So as I thought the paypal account is an Indian account. NOT a US one.
Is the ebay account registered in India or the US?

Interesting situation.
Frankly Im surprised your account lasted so far with the current setup.
I think you might have to call up to get more info on this.
As it is though the tax authorities in the US will not ask for anything until you reach 20,000 per year - which does not seem to be the case so you don't need to worry about it for now.
But that setup seems shaky so I would get some backup stealth accounts going - with all US information since youre in the US and are able to open a US bank account.

i already have us bank account, but the problem is as a student you cant do any business here, that's why i gave all my Indian address.
you know something. i called eBay 3 days back with this account i raised the selling limit 10 to 100 now,
eBay asked your Paypal address and eBay address does not match?
i told i am currently staying in USA.

If you are earning monies in the USA, there is a chance you have taxes to pay.
Now, because this is not an area where most of us know all the requirements, I would suggest you look at this site Internal Revenue Service
It is free to use and you can even ask the staff what your obligations are.
Better to do that than get into trouble in the future.

| Technically speaking, Yes you should pay tax on sales generated in the USA on a US registered ebay account.
A good place to start is IRS publication 515. and publication 519 which covers Non-Resident Aliens. Its complicated. I am no tax expert. If you are only selling a few hundred or even a few thousand, you can probably not file as you can be considered a casual seller and the IRS most likely not come after you. If you are clearly running a business, then yes, the IRS expects you to pay taxes.
The kicker in your case is your paypal account is India domiciled. Since it is paypal that will ask your tax info to submit to the IRS, having it based in India avoids that part.
I don't think all these Chinese sellers are paying US taxes though. I am sure if you call the IRS they will "yes you have to pay us money." | |
