I have heard nicehash might have lost upwards of $40-50 million worth of coins. I lost .25 cents.

A friend suggested that it was just the owners lining their own pockets. I don't care to make a judgement either way, but I hope they release details of the hack to prevent it from happening again.

This hack worked out for those of us that set up our own miners to run algo's. There has been a lot less hash power out there to compete with as miners that dont know how to mine without nice hash try to figure out what to do.
I've been making $45-50 a day running cryptonight algo mining ETN. I've been watching the hash power slowly rise back up as these nice hash miners find there way back into regular pool mining.
Hopefully today will be another $50 day...

That is always a possibility and if so would be difficult to prove I suppose.

Technically you should never ever keep anything on third party platform. Earnings should always be cashed out right away.
Its like handing a stranger money and tell him to hold onto it. Cashout always to wallet. Tons of good examples out there why you should never hold your coins at a third party platform site.

There are so many wallets to use
1. Blockchain.io
2. Jaxx Wallet
3. Electrum wallet
4. Bread Wallet
I would use blockchain.io for BTC and Jaxx for alt crypto. If the blockchain goes down. Then BTC would be worthless.

Cold storage and offline wallets - why anyone would leave anything more than a coin on any online wallets for the long term is just plain stupidity.
Nicehash had what, daily or weekly payouts anyway right? Why anyone would keep the money there and not disperse it automatically is also baffling...

I like how at the very bottom they didn't even leave a measly $132.17 behind! lol.

Waiting for coinbase or a major exchange to be next. If it happened to coinbase, it probably wouldn't affect their growth much.

Aren't all their assets on Gdax? When someone puts in a buy order or sell order, isn't it moved to Gdax and then filled?

Otherwise you can store it in your coinbase wallet.
You can even manually transfer all your funds into coinbase vault - cold storage. (Google for more info).
But if you're a long term investor, i'd strongly suggest holding around 50% in a hardware wallet like Trezor, and the other 50% in a cold storage.
I say 50/50 because I've read an article where a chap forgot his Trezor pin... |

Looks like coinbase sources their coins from other customers like an exchange, GDAX, other exchanges, and whatever vault they have. There is still a fair amount of coins that someone could get access to that are online for a period of time. https://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/com...nbase_get_the/ | The Following User Says Thank You to duffrageous For This Useful Post: | |
