A US court will award damages against you in the US if you lose. US courts have no jurisdiction in Canada. You simply default on the case and walk away. The judgement is made in the US and any legal remedies apply in the US only. You don't have to declare bankruptcy or do any other nonsense.

Something doesn't add up, how do you spend 20k on a lawyer before you've even got to court? Fees sound too high and the story is incoherent....
Also in terms of legal advice, I doubt there are specialists in intellectual property law on the forum so unfortunately it's unlikely you'll find the right answers here.
