yes ofcourse it is possible. I have been in china to meet suppliers - so online it is even easier. 1. i am not chinese speaker, so it is easier to communicate by programs. They are not good in english too. 2. you always can ask samples from manufacturers before you work with them.
To find good supplier will take6-12 months, but it is possible to do online. 100 percent. Traveling to china is not must, only to find supplier

I also do not think you should go there before you make orders of 50k and above. If you make such big orders, you can go and meet the manufacturers in person and get better prices. Relatives always give better prices to relatives.
1688 is great for comparing prices and negotiation on alibaba.

Considering that current scenario I would say... no, not at all.

I would personally find a buying agent, you can call a hktdc office and they can help you find one. i went to the los angeles office and got one before. They are the ones that can speak the language and can help with suppliers.

You will find it cheaper than that on alibaba or 1688.com

You cant eat vegetables, you cant have water or ice cubes etc...You must be very careful if not stomach pains and diarrhea are your fate.

My friends who only travel there for business absolutely hate going. They say it is horrible unless you are into nude massages and cheap/free hookers.

My big turnoff now is that we cant eat the street foods or have fish head soup because of the water quality.

No offense to our Chinese members or my Chinese friends. It is just very different from the USA and a culture shock to most of us.

Not anyone of USA love china, and not anyone of USA don`t like china . Yes, we have not good air here, but we love our homeland.

It is not necessary at all. There are people/companies known as sourcing agents in every country simply Google Chinese Sourcing Agent, and you will see take a look here:

No, its definitely not a must to travel there.
Here's a good place to find reliable suppliers - Made-in-China.com

We have used this personally and you can get in touch with the suppliers directly via chat/email.

All the best!
