Default ebay new accounts - need to rethink rules?

Stealth advice: play it slow - very slow - go steady - don't get attention?

Imagine if you are new to ebay. You have no experience selling on ebay.

You run a business making ornaments that you sell for at $50 in other places.
You open an account and get a generous listing capability of 1000 items and $10,000 limit. (Some new accounts get this randomly - I think I am right in saying.)

So you put all stock you have for sale on ebay.

You looked at the limits given to you and you maximised - as you already had an established selling business?

I'm sure ebay would actually suspend and ask for verification.
My question is about the need to go slow - surely we don't need to go VERY slow and selling an item for $50 is OK?

Look at it from ebay/PayPal point of view, you are a MASSIVE risk, they don't know you or your business, they don't know if you are a good or bad operator....

The start slowly and build trust over a period of months is the best way to build a solid, long lasting account without encountering major issues along the way.

Its a balance

Yes you can start with £30/40 items but you do want to build up the stock slowly

You may well able to list £10,000 worth of stock but if that all sold withing your first few weeks of trading, while eBay may not have an issue with it I can guarantee that PayPal would.

You have to remember that eBay isn't the major issue here when it comes to limitation. Its PayPal that you have to worry about

Agree with James eBay is very easy to remove suspension but PayPal very hard and faster you sell PayPal will limit your account

It's more about not wanting to draw attention to your account.

When you bring attention to your account, you risk suspension/limits that wouldn't happen if you built things up slowly (you gain trust from your selling history); trust us, those that say slow and steady is a better way to go have tried the alternative, fast and risky, and have failed. Suspensions and Limitations will STILL happen. Not today but later on. Paypal will eventually ask you for documentation on where you buy your stock etc. There is no 2 ways round it. So hold on to all invoices for these purposes.

not at all true. I have not been asked for docs in years.... If you are still getting requests for invoices, it is because of what you are selling or because you change categories and items sold prices rapidly.

The first few items you sell on eBay will be the deciding factor whether you get to sell on the platform, or your rights to sell on eBay get indefinitely revoked.

I've seen it swing both ways. A high risk item is enough for eBay to turn around and say to you, we don't want you selling here, with no room for appeal.

But take a slow and steady approach, and they'll be more understanding if you have hiccups down the line.

I've got accounts which are over several years old, never had any hiccups. No invoice requests, etc., that's because stealth teaches you a great technique. See eBay doesn't have much of an appetite for risk, so the solution is to spread that risk and sell over multiple accounts. Then things will just flow a lot smoother for you, trust me.
