Default eBay return policy and defect

Had an item listed with returns not accepted, buyer orders, we ship and then opens up a return "doesn't fit" eBay says im not obligated to accept, so i decline. Case closed, move on with life.

3+ Weeks later, customer returns the item and adds the shipping receipt in the messages once delivered.

I do not refund, i had no returns.

Customer opens up a case, i get a defect and a 400.00 nearly forced refund because i didnt refund once package was received.

WTF!

But you accepted the return.
Do you have the iteim now?
You cannot have the money AND the item,you should have refused the item.
If you marked refuse,return to sender without opening the package,return shipping is fee

what did you do wrong is accept the return.
Item not as described trumps no return ,not sure what is meant by does not fit,is it due to defect /buyer remorse ?
But you have the item now,so you can relist.

also as she has accepted the return,she failed to issue a refund,one cannot have both-item and money.
if buyer returns in same condition,she can always relist

Not restricted,but a penalty,her FVF would be higher

AMZN is findIng out its prime and non prime buyers are returning used items,spoiled items,items which is not bought from AMZN.

I have been selling on Ebay for many years,if my memory serves me,I have may be 10 returns.
Most of my items are either brand new,or used but in VERY good condition.
On Ebay,buyers are hoping to find a bargain,when they realise it aint a bargain,they want their money back,it is the Ebay mentality.

FVF can be 4% higher

Well, i accepted it for lack of a better word, as it was sent back UPS and was sent without signature, so have no way to refuse package as we also get legitimate returns daily from our other sales channels.

Yes, i do have the return.

What did i do wrong?

on ebay it is always better to accept all returns as if you are a business that is obliged to do it

because ebay may put you down for disputes over large amounts and you may lose your account while a proper processing of return requests would not have such an impact if they do not come in in bulk. I am not joking

If the return is open as item not as described its still knock against your account if enough of those pile up.

if they pile up unsolved , this depends on amount and the way of resolution

the TO described the worst possible way to deal with a return , several such disputes with such resolution within a short time might be enough to get the account restricted for good

Its always in your best interest to offer free returns or at the very least, buyer paid returns. If a buyer truly doesn't want an item, they can open an INAD and force you to take the return. If they are out of the 30 days, they can open a chargeback and also possibly get their funds back. Rather than dodging, i've found just accepting returns leads me to the lowest return rate i have ever had.

The simple way to counter this is having at least 10 items you can sell for break even or lose about $1-$2 per sale. This is what I do, and I'm actively trying to increase the amount of goods I have like this. It is perfect for feedback dilution, and overall metrics. It allows you to dilute your metrics. I think everyone on eBay should be doing this unless you never face issues with customers. Enough item not described returns over the threshold increases your fees, and now with increased security I'm sure trigger AI to inspect the account.
