Assistance with strange email

Apologies in advance to anyone I have annoyed them in this thread - friday afternoon and I am dealing with some incompetence on my end of the spectrum...

That is an interesting point. I have to wonder how many people receive such an email, freak out and stop selling online. ALl because of one little retard who thinks he is smarter than everyone else.

Here are some points to keep in mind if this ever happend again, or happens to you:

1) NEVER contact eBay, PayPal or Amazon about such emails. If there REALLY IS a legitimate organization coming after you, contacting EB/PP/AMZ will not help you anyway.

2) NEVER respond to such an email. It is TEMPTING, I know. My first thought was to respond and ask them for a phone number. But they wouldn't give it to you anyways, and then they just know they have rattled you.

3) NEVER remove listings based on such an email! If the organization is REAL, then this is practically an admission of guilt.

4) NEVER let it get to you. This is simply e-commerce 2.0 - if you are going to sell online, you will always be dealing with crap like this.

5) ALWAYS search for the company and their email address. If it is REAL, then you will have no problems finding out LOTS AND LOTS about them. They will have a website, phone number, ACTUAL email address (not GMAIL, Yahoo, Hotmail, etc.)

The thing is, if a law enforcement agency were coming after you (and they almost NEVER go after the small sellers) then you wouid not be receiving an email, it would be a knock on your door.

If an actual rights holder organization were to come after you, they COULD send an email, but it would contain their details. They would WANT you to know who they were, how to contact them, and that they were serious.

I don't think we should give this guy much credit to be honest. Most of the email is most certainly just copy and paste from another source. And for $3 he could have setup a domain with a professional looking email address.... Na, I think he's just a low end creep trying to ruffle feathers of the competition. Nothing great here

Thank you all sooooooooooo much im suxh a fool and have been tryed to be scamed so many times and nearly all the time i have been took of ebay 7days- 30 days so this was the final cut!!!! i did look and see the car site but i guess panic, thank you all i feel a tw** will let you all now if thw arse emails back.
And hey this is a cool site and yeh ebay are crap i do agree!!!xxxxxxxx

Another way to tell where the email came from is change you email settings to display full headers .

But whoever sent that email is just plainly stupid and a low life.

THey can't make money themselves, so they have to screw with others who are working hard.

Um, possibily not. That was part of the old UK email address 'googlemail'. It changed for new users to gmail in about May of this year.

Agreed it is likely to be a competitor but the address (googlemail) can be valid.

as you note, it used to be used and right now gets redirected to gmail. But that wasn't my concern. googlemail yes, a company using it, no.

You're assuming now. This ebayer is a top-rated seller. What on his listings suggests he's the person who sent you the email? Reading the other info, the guy would appear to be a not so smart spammer. Proceed with care. DONT put a name on this forum again.

his email links to the website address along with many other car chats, then if you look at the adverts the same pics, this email is regestered on ebay when you put it on community however because ive not brought anything i carnt get ebay info?

Yes, and THIS DISTINCTION IS IMPORTANT!

If the website you found contains his email, then it is most likely the same person. HOWEVER MANY ADS ON THE INTERNET ARE COPIED! The website owner could be totally inncoent here. He may have had his text or pictures copied by the person who sent you the letter.

I didn't mean for everyone to go and become a skiptracer! I managed a skiptracing department for FOUR YEARS. It is important to be able to distinguish a positive hit from a false hit.

Doing this is a great way to get eBay to look at EVERYONE including yourself.

It also potentially breaks the law, although I am not a legal expert.

Not to mention, someone smarter than you may figure out that you are behind it and create a REAL problem.

My Mom always told me, no matter how smart, good looking, or wealthy you think you are, there is ALWAYS someone SMARTER, BETTER LOOKING, and WEALTHIER!

What goes around comes around. I firmly believe people that mess with other sellers won't last long. Sooner or later they hit the wrong seller... Whatever they think they will accomplish is very short term. They should spend more time focusing on their business, not others...

I actually agree to that. And it's been proven that good karma always find the right people, no matter how long it'll take.

Regardless, people will still do what they do. We can just do our best to cut our losses smaller.
