I noticed that ebay now requires you to provide a phone number in order to open a case, although I'm uncertain why. Have they ever attempted to call you? I don't see the point.

As a buyer you mean Ballsack? I open cases as a seller all the time - unpaid and cancellation...haven't been asked for phone number.

ebay changed the rules.
Now, if there is any sort of 'talk' within ebay messages, a case gets opened at once.

I have had it done when I have escalated a claim. They just ask you to communicate with the buyer and yada yada yada.
And they also make sure the number is valid.

Is it a high % if you say you need to do this all the time?
Shudders at the thought of that ebay contact |

And they also make sure the number is valid. | I gave them a disposable number just in case, although depending on where I am I probably won't even be able to respond to the phone call or hear it. I wonder what happens in that situation. In any case, all this teaches me a valuable lesson. Never purchase anything remotely of any value from someone with only a handful of feedbacks. I don't see how ebay buyer protection will help me if the potential scammer closes his account and withdraws his money right away.
@greenie, I think this is only relevant to buyers who complain, not sellers. I've opened cases as a seller without them calling me

Few newer sellers have reported being suspended because of lack of phone number.

You should be safe.

You should be safe. | In the past, sellers using paypal would just disappear with the money and that would be that. Unless you file a chargeback there was absolutely no way to get any money from paypal. Have things changed?

Some of the cases have been terrible for sellers.

Some of the cases have been terrible for sellers. | So you get back your money even if the seller decides to abandon his account? I don't know if this is actually the case with me, but it's mighty suspicious that they wouldn't respond to an open case after a day.

Every case differs.
Buyers have been refunded under most unusual circumstances.
Sellers have been left without funds and without items.

Had to open up a case of non-receipt on a buying account at work just now - had to put in my phone number (as you had discussed OP) - no call - just today's experience.

I think if a call is made it's probably going to happen once the case gets escalated like cj said. Hopefully this case ends quick and I get my money back because the seller hasn't even responded to the open case. To me, no response to a open case should mean an automatic closure.

I doubt that they will call unless there is high suspicion of buyer fraud going on ("professional buyer" so to speak - even that's so rare to identify on eB's part ugh).

Besides, a working phone number is always suggested for stealth, NutSack | The last 4 or 5 cases against me there was NO talk. I wished there was because I can usually settle it right then unless the buyer is just plain out to screw me.
Also EB & PP will always try to verify or get information they have previously obtained or do not have from us.
