At the same time the buyer refuses to release the goods to a pickup courier if i send one up, saying he wants the refund first..Tryna be smart

Depends on if the reason of the return request was your fault. Was it because you listed the item wrong or something along those lines? Or was it his fault such as he purchased the wrong item? if it was me I would pick up the postage cost (within reason) as long as its not a 60 dollar postage fee. I would then offer to pay half. The reason I would just pay the postage is so he doesn't leave negative feedback. That hurts you in the long run. But I would not send a refund without getting the item back first. If all else fails call ebay. theres a slim chance it will be helpful, but it doesn't hurt to try.
Ebay rules state, no return, no money back. So if he dont return it, then you dont have to refund. Nor can he leave bad feedback. SO let him open a case and politely offer a prepaid return label. He refuses, escalate it to ebay. They will bounce it out, if he refuses. Then block the sob from all accounts.
