An eBay Item-Page Redesign Could Affect Use of Templates
eBay surveyed sellers on the appeal of new designs to View Item Pages that go much further than the one it rolled out this year. As described in today's AuctionBytes Newsflash newsletter, two new designs under consideration would limit sellers in what information they could include on the product description pages and where the information could be placed.
Many third-party developers make a living selling templates and galleries to eBay sellers. If eBay limits sellers to using its own, standardized template, this could jeopardize those businesses. However, as stated in the article, we are not privy to how many versions eBay may be testing, or how far along in the development stage eBay is with an Item page redesign. eBay might also make exceptions to who would be required to use a new Item page redesign.
The standardized design - some might say sterile compared to current eBay pages - looks more like a listing on Amazon.com than a traditional eBay listing.
eBay is set to make an announcement this month about major changes coming to the site in September. But given the scope of the redesign under consideration, it seems unlikely eBay would be planning to roll out such a change in the fall.
