Question about selling auto parts on ebay

I have a family member who is a retired auto tech and he wants
to get rid of some of the auto parts he has accumulated.
These are all genuine, labeled, unused new parts.

My question is, how long does a buyer have to return a part?
What if they put it on their car and 3,4,5 months later it breaks?
These parts will not have a manufacturer warranty since they are
not being purchased through the dealer. I don't expect this to
happen often but you know how people can be. Especially home
mechanics who break something trying to put it on the car.

Can they still file a claim? How long is the claim period with paypal now?
I thought it was 6 months. Does that fall under the idea that the
buyer altered the item by using it so it couldn't be claimed?

Also, is that a risky item to be selling on ebay? I don't have tons to sell but
there are some Maserati parts in the mix, all genuine.

I have done some more checking on line and reading ebay seller comments on ebay.
It appears that returns are allowed for up to 6 months with pp.
That's enough to deter me from selling the few parts we have to sell.

I could not find anything about whether pp would take into account the fact
that the part had been used. It's hard to find much on disputes besides
the obvious stuff.

I read a couple stories about people trying to install parts themselves and broke things and then returning them. One was a water pump. The other thing I read was people buying the part and sending it back as not as described and including a used part instead of the one that was shipped.

I also wondered what would happen if a few months after installing, the part
breaks. Is that covered through paypal's 6 month dispute window?

eBay will protect you when a buyer sends back a different part.

You can always find negative stories. Not many people are going to say "yes, this is great", because they don't want your competition.

If you only have a small limited supply of auto parts, I say sell them!

The rules on Ebay motor is different,but it only applies to auto,no auto parts.
Ebay MBG money back guarantee allows the buyer to file a dispute within 30 days ,if it is INAD,then you will provide a return shipping label for his return,once tracking shows delivered,you refund or else Ebay will do it for you.
if after 30 days,then he will have to file with Paypal or his cc issuer,return would be on his dime when he wins the dispute with Paypal.
If he wins the dispute with his cc issuer,he may not have to return the item and you will pay $20 chargeback fee.
If you refuse the return and he wins the dispute,he gets to keep your part and get his money back,refusal of return means you dont want the item back,so no need to send it back.
Yes,there are DO IT YOURSELF buyers who screwed up and blame it on you,or just return the bad one and get yours free.
There is a feature where Ebay allows local pick up,cash payment,not sure how it works now,it used to be you can say local pickup and then he said I cant come myself,I will send someone to pick up the item,then you get cash or check and no need for tracking.

The problem with buying and selling on Ebay is that many are do it yourself fixers,but there are also professional looking for a rare or hard to find parts.
