The EASIEST way to change your IP? Or is it? - misinformation to be ignored

I copied and pasted this from my tut on another website...

A Virtual Machine is essentially a computer inside of a computer. It's main purpose is to allow you to use eBay with a different IP address.



Things you need before you can start:

• MS Virtual PC 2007 - Download
• An .iso of a Windows operating system. - These are torrents. Use a client such as Bittorrent to download any of the following. Download, Another one, And another, And another

1. Install MS Virtual PC (now referred to as MSVM)
2. In MSVM, click on File -> New Virtual Machine Wizard
3. Click in this order in the dialog boxes (You'll understand once you see it):

Create a Virtual Machine
Name it something you want
Choose Windows XP for the Operating System
Use recommended RAM
New Virtual Hard Disk (give it 3GB of space)
Click Finish
Start the VM then go to CD -> Capture ISO image. CHoose the ISO you downloaded

• If it asks you something about a floppy drive, click on Disconnect or whatever the option is to disable it (because you will never use it).
• Install XP. Choose option 1. Choose NTFS (Quick) for the formatting.
• After it's installed, go to Whatisyourip.net to check if the IP is different...

You're done! Just make sure you install VM Additions from the VM's menu so you can increase the resolution (optional)

Some notes:
-There's a small chance you will NOT have a different IP because some ISPs only allow one IP per household. The only way to fix this is to use a proxy (making the VM useless)

I'm not sure, but i think if your using a router it'll give you the same IP. Otherwise great program!

Sorry, but I don't get it? What is 'auto on the VM' (I know VM=Virtual Machine, but what is auto?) What's the benefit? How is this better than changing IP's and refraining from typing 'i hate ebay' in an open text doc over and over while you're logged into their site! :D

Sorry that guide was originally for a game...edited it to make more sense.

This is easier than changing IPs (at least for me, mine is a pain to change) because once you make the VM, all you do is use that for eBay and Paypal.

how does this change your ip address i dont see how it can change an ip address you can certainly fool ebay into thinking your using a different machine, BUT your internet connection will be the same the source ip address will be the same ???? more clarification is needed.

I think that the idea is that this method creates a virtual IP that you can use to do ebay/paypal. In otherwords, you have the IP but you create within it the virtual IP which is not traceable by ebay. How does that sound?
Just a point that at this time this is rather an overkill. The established
ways are still working successfully.

I have a mac running parallels and it doesn't change my ip I do have a different comp name for windows but same ip address

Have you checked this virtual machine with an IP revealing website? As it could give you an intranet IP address but your internet IP would be the same.

Companies actually purchase IP ranges and not just make them up.

thats exactly what i thought also modee... cant have a virtual ip address it will always somehow resolve to your REAL ip address, although one thing that can be done thou which i think is a good idea, is you can use this virtual system which guarantees a clean system AND then use a dialup account
