Default broadband usage

ive just had my phone bill

landline and broadband

ive been with the supplier for 3 years

bill has never ever been above £50 gbp

the new bill is almost £200 gbp

i nearly fell through the floor

they said ive used 100gb of extra data

ive told them this isnt possible

they say it is 23% streaming media and 67% torrent downloads

its impossible but they say "unlucky you will need to pay it"

ive lodged a complaint but they say i wont get anywhere

Well how many movies did you d/l? Why don't you setup alerts for the future for when you reach a certain usage? I have never seen someone successfully fight these charges.

Correct attitude.
I used to have the same with BT.
£200 a month with all there silly fees for going over my usage.
Now its all totally unlimited costs me £45 a month for phone and unlimited BB
Tell them your leaving to go elsewhere .. works wonders with these providors .

I thought all the UK broadband suppliers did unlimited broadband didn't realise any were still restricted.

Have they supplied you with a wireless router for your broadband? If so just tell it must have been someone else using your wifi and act dumb on the phone.

Who is your supplier?

Cant speak for the US market but UK providors have teams to try and keep customers.
There is lots of competition here from the likes of virgin etc so BT will cut a deal .
I do the same with SKY tv every few months i will call and tell them ive had a better offer and i want to cancel.
They will give lots of add ons and freebies to keep you there.
A correctly worded phone call will see you with there best package £80 a month for £29 .

so you did not download any torrentz you say -it is all password secured right? it is your responsiblity to secure it, but might be worth asking them to provide proof of charges, maybe someone else local is leeching your broadband?

I just cannot see how you can do £200 without knowing it...they need to prove it...

If you have been with the same provider for years, ask to speak to a manager rather than CSRep - last month I had a bill of 800....asked to speak to manager (been with the provider for 16 years)...explained that this was unusual and would like some credit, blah blah blah.

Got $400 knocked off.

It's a speciality of plusnet.

Lump with extra charges.

Fight them hard.

Did you not get something new with them last November?
Just had similar with my mobile.

Terrible misunderstanding NOT. There were calls made at a time I could prove the phone was switched off.

Yep, stand your ground

We are pleased to be able to inform you that a member of our Customer Support
Centre has now escalated your Question [number ********]
for further investigation.

The following comment was added to the Question
Dear *********,
Thank you for your patience.

I have double checked your usage and this appears to be correct. Unfortunately we have no way of determining the exact activities or application that may have used this data, but to aid you in your investigation I have provided a daily breakdown of your usage for the period and a hourly breakdown of your usage for the larger days below:

As you can see the majority of this usage is upload, so it is likely that you may have left a torrent or something similar seeding, resulting in the upstream traffic being used extensively.

If your usage habits have changed it, may be worthwhile upgrading to our new Unlimited package. I can confirm that if you were to upgrade to Plusnet Unlimited your monthly broadband cost would be as follows:

Plusnet UnlimitedMonthly price12 month contract£9.99No contract£12.49

If you wish to upgrade your package you can do this via the following link: Change Your Package. Please note that this will occur on your next billing date.

Hope this answers your query fully.

so basically they are saying "we have no idea how, when why or where you used this data but give us your money and upgrade your plan "

really though ?

What sucks about UK and Canada is it's low population and limited amount of internet companies. In the USA there is so much competition that they offer unlimited broadband!

Canada and UK don't eh? In the US they hate to see you go! So they wave it or say "Sorry sir our mistake we'll take care of it for you!" I threaten to leave phone companies all the time if my bill was too high, and they would take care of it and I wouldn't have to worry about it. these companies can't make money off it's population so they try to limit you and tax you for it!
---------------------

And on a serious note, don't you read the contract??? Of how much is unlimited? OR what they offer you? Since 2005 I have on all my laptops or computers, a DU METER! You should really invest in finding one, it lets you know how much you downloaded/uploaded within a days work, week, month, yearly and it shows day by day.

dumeter.com

Now you got no reason to complain! When you download torrents you are also uploading at the same time, cauing more broadband!

You can find an older version for FREE online. Now it's too late don't let it happen again! If you make money online with ebay and so on. Then know that "it takes money to make money" torrents! lol

I do about 10 to 20GB per day of downloads, youtube streams etc. + skype video + skype calling to the US/CAD and it takes up bandwitdh of 20k per second, so 20k upload, 20k download total of 40k per second 1 minute is like 2.4MB, and videos are about 500k per second so 1Mb per 2 seconds.

Eat your heart out!
