Default starting an e-commerce website..but where?

I wanted to open my own website after being kicked out of ebay. I posted an ad asking help from people to create website for(paid of course) And I got so many resonses in a very short time. They got me confused. SOme wanted $3-4000 for it and some wanted $400.
What am I missing? I asked for a very simple website where I can post few hundred items and get paid with a shopping cart(proccessing credit cards and may be PayPal too).
As far as to get noticed on the web some people said shopping cart websites are useless and I need a custom design website..is that true?
Any advice on how to start selling on a website without spending a fortune?

So far I checked out yahoo stores, they ask for $79 a month plus percentage.
amazon.com stores $60 a month plus percentage. 1and1.com has an offer everything included for $50 a month..I am not sure if they take any percentage from sales.. do these websites have a better chance than a site somebody will make for me? and if someone builds the website for me how much will I have to pay monthly for the payment processing? and do I still pay percentage to anybody(payment processors?)
thanks..

All you need is a domain... go to godaddy for this

And a premade SEO shopping cart. After tons of research I found that CS-Cart.com has the best shopping cart for the price. I use it on one of my sites, it's very easy to use and SEO friendly.

Then start listing your products, there are no monthly fees.

It takes work but it's worth it in the long run.

how does it work? I mean how do I create my categories and stuff? I have a domain already. I couldnt see anything that explains how I can work on it. I am sorry but I am really novice with this stuff. What do I do after I download it? Should I have someone do it for me and ask them to use this website?

Citimax.com is a good place to start for beginners. $20 a month to have a website and a shopping cart. It's extremely simple, anyone can use it. they have auto submission to google base, shopping.com etc. Also has google site maps, forum page, your own domain email etc.

For advanced users, it may be too simplistic and have some shortcomings (no php, etc), but when I started a few years ago with my husband's site and knew nothing about website/cart creation, it was a great place to start.

e-junkie.com is 5$ a month for like 10 items, and a bit more if you want more items.
remember you will also need a merchant account and a gateway to accept credit card payments through your site unless you will be using paypal or google checkout.

Just to let you know I build websites. I built this one right here. Authentic TV Series DVD Boxset and I'm working on another website right now for a customer. So if anybody need a website dont be afraid to ask. Of course now I'm going to use CS-cart..

Website prices range from $300 up to $1200

Site looks nice. Interesting it says "you can get it on ebay. Free shipping on selected items."

I use web hosting with shopping cart from Power Sellers Unite - Online Auction Industry Discussion Forum and Ecommerce Store web hosting
They are cheap in my opinion, like $10 per month, with free license shopping cart, easier to learn and use than Miva for example. It comes with many choices of layout design templates, simply choose one and it changes right away.

Got the service only weeks ago, haven't the time to work on it yet.
