| | | The_Cynic | 09-17-2008 03:36 PM | I neglected to mention one other source of free good links. You Ebay about me page. There was an ebay proposal to nix off ebay links from all ebay pages, but they reversed it. You can link from your ebay about me page. The links are good. I checked.
warning ebay link http://cgi3.ebay.com/robots.txt
You can link from your listings as long you follow their restrictive rules.
---- Also ebay store URLs can be very strong on the SERPS. If you want your ebay store to rank just point a few links at it. That's something that just proved itself to me firsthand.
Cheers! |
| The_Cynic | 09-28-2008 09:01 PM | A couple new ones
jeqq.com
linkatopia.com
and
bringr.com
All good links |
| The_Cynic | 10-02-2008 04:33 PM | |
| aspkin | 10-02-2008 07:22 PM | Interesting... I need to spend like 4 hours and go through all these sites for backlinks. :) |
| The_Cynic | 10-06-2008 10:52 PM | Just came across a couple more Last.fm – The Social Music Revolution a huge PR9 gives good links from your profile page, but if you post on their "Journal" feature, the links are nofollow Yahoo! 360° - Home PR8 gives good links from your main page with them and from blog pages.
I have been experimenting a little and I will share a few lessons.
--I am trying to get a new site to rank for a relatively competitive phrase.
So, my first plan was to throw a bunch of links at that url. That worked okay, I threw 15 links at it and I got in the top 7 on yahoo and top 5 on microsoft, nowhere, on google though. But on Google, something weird happened, I was using social media (do follow) and the Social Media sites ended up ranking pretty well (3 in the top ten), but for the target url, sucked it hard on Google.
LESSON ----- for Google, Domain cred (PR type factors) means a bunch more than links.
I am selling this item on my amazon account (only seller).
-- So I decided to throw a few links at the amazon url.
WHOA, in less than 2 hours the amazon url was #3 in the Google serps. I will slowly throw a few more links at the Amazon url over the next couple of months to hold the position and hopefully own it. We will see.
** Tactic, you still want to throw links at your own site, but a few links at a strong domain will do wonders in Google. USE PROXY Pages that refer your site/page.
-- Strongest Social domains in Google. by rank ( based on my recent experience). A url from of these can usually get in top ten. ( better if you throw a few more links at it though)
1) DIGG
2) webshots
3) MIXX
4) Plime
5) Stumble
Hope this helps, Cheers! |
| Seisei | 10-14-2008 06:41 PM | Good Job Cynic! another tip is you can link or comments on the blogs which has high pr but related to your sites. Good backlinks will give you higher pr and good keyword rankings. |
| The_Cynic | 10-14-2008 09:56 PM | That is right, but you need to find DO FOLLOW links. Most comments are regulated and contain the rel=No Follow tag. Which google mandates to reduce spam.
However there is a free program which will find relevant forums with good ( do follow) links. Comment Kahuna | Free Link Building Software
In about 10 minutes using this you can jam out 10 good do follow links in relevant on topic forums. Comment Kahuna ranks the sites by PR too.
If you want to venture into the black hat area and automate the process, search for Xrummer or some of the synd8 stuff. |
| The_Cynic | 10-19-2008 11:39 AM | Something new.
I tried a little experiment last night to see how strongly the ebay review subdomain does in search.
I wrote a review on one of my keywords and then I threw a few links at it last night.
I checked the keyword this morning and whoa, it was #14 for my keyword, which is fairly competitive. That just goes to show you how google places a high value on domain cred. -- USE Proxy pages on Domains with cred.---
Anyway, the challenge now is to keep it moving up.
The answer to doing that lies within the secret of the success of Wikipedia on google. One of the Main reasons wikipedia dominates google serps is because they have a widget which links to another one of their pages whenever that pages' keyword is placed anywhere in wikipedia text on any wikipedia page.
- This gives wikipedia pages massive internal linking strength.
-A lesser known secret is that google counts internal site links almost as much as external site links.
So, the answer for me to move this ebay review url up the serps, is to link to it from my ebay auction and FP item pages. (It is allowed to link to a EBAY review from an item page).
That is not big a deal since you can bulk edit text to the bottom of your listings on TL.
Bingo, next week that ebay review url should have hundreds more internal links.
I will post again to update this.
- Oh. In case you don't know, the incentive to write an ebay review is that you and your stuff get highlighted (including your store) on the ebay review page.-- |
| The_Cynic | 10-21-2008 03:31 PM | A little update.
the serps result ranking for the ebay review page has fallen a bit from #14 to #17 ( however I haven't thrown anymore links at it since the first though)
Also the rankings of the Social media proxy pages have fallen a bit.
I think shows Google must use some kind of freshness boost in their results. (newer stuff gets a push up). |
| papajohns | 10-25-2008 08:18 AM | cynic |
| The_Cynic | 10-26-2008 03:30 PM | hey there Shekhar,
I had a look at your site.
quick overview,
You are in the google sandbox because -whois says started aug 08
yahoo show 20 external links mostly -boards.ie, styledesign.in, digital forums and tennison property.
Google pagerank- zero and no alexa or compete rating either
It's a brand new site and it will be a year or so before you get any love from Google no matter how links you can throw at it.
Okay,
If this were my site I would do a couple things
-- put a wordpress blog on the site and set up a rss feed for your products. Write posts about your hottest products using a unique spin that will attract your target market. Then promote those posts on social media sites.
--- load your products to Google base
Because the site is new you will have to use proxies to drive traffic and get serps.
Setup accounts on mixx, digg, delicious, jeqq, bringr etc..
post about your stuff
setup blogs on Livejournal, blogspot, yahoo 360 and wordpress
post about your stuff and interlink
Download the free comment kahuna,
then do a search for relevant do follow blogs using your keywords and do relevant on topic posts including a link back to your site, or a proxy page you are promoting.
Set up a flickr, webshots, pica albums etc...and load your pics, on some you can post links back to your site.
That should give some decent traffic until you get out of the google sandbox.
Cheers! |
| The_Cynic | 10-26-2008 03:55 PM | Hey there,
Is it Zach or Shekar? Whois shows shekar mehta owns the domain, if you registered with him you should get godaddy to transfer the domain to your name.
Anyway, I looked a little more at your site.
You are using asp database query urls, those database query urls (with the ?)
are search engine death.
-- No biggie just add a plugin to rewrite the urls in the bread crumb style.
see yoast breadcrumbs or the redirection plugin
Fixing the urls will help in the serps.
Cheers! |
| Caseyjr86 | 10-26-2008 11:32 PM | Hey cynic,
I'm lazy and have a website, I'm willing to pay you to submit my site, and get me some more backlinks if your up to it. I'm sure it would only take an hour or 2 and am willing to pay you pretty well.
Here is the site.. Starcraft 2 Vanilla
(I love video games) :) |
| aspkin | 10-27-2008 12:06 AM | Yeah and if you do CaseyJR's site, I have a site that needs some work too. Let me know if you have the time. :) |
| papajohns | 10-27-2008 08:15 AM | meet to cynic pm me if you would be able submit my site properly . shekhar is the guy who designed it for me , he is a nice guy but i should have it in my name yes? |
| papajohns | 10-27-2008 08:16 AM | i would be willing to pay you aswell thanks mate |
| The_Cynic | 10-27-2008 06:23 PM | Hey guys, Thank you for those offers. I appreciate it. Right now though I am swamped with Christmas orders, building my own sites and moving my inventory to Amazon.
I am more than happy though, to stop by in my free time and help on the board though.
A little update on screensaver technique. (where you give away a free CLEAN screensaver from a url you want links to)
-It works ( I gave one lousy screensaver from one of my sites and got about 30 high PR do follow links from the down load sites, which has really helped that site in terms of Page rank and domain cred.)
The only drawback is the time it takes to do those PAD files on the software download sites. |
| papajohns | 10-29-2008 10:22 AM | cynic sorry now but i am an absolute beginner at the whole internet marketing thing.
so just wondering could you explain this comment u made and tell me how i would go about doing this
"Because the site is new you will have to use proxies to drive traffic and get serps"
also rss feeds not to sure about this too how would i go about listing my product or can u explain rss feeds abit
cheers thanks for the advice again |
| 411guru | 10-29-2008 10:35 AM | Guys,
I would suggest that you do this internet marketing thing yourselves. Sure you can hire someone to do it and be up and running in 3 days. Or you can do it yourself and be up in 3 weeks. BUT you will learn so much. You have to maintain your websites, ad campaigns etc. How are you going to do that if you yourself didn't set it up? Plus its fun and interesting. At least for me.
How do you go about doing this? Use google and search for those terms you don't understand. Even wikipedia. |

if you have any other advice i would be very grateful? cheers |
| The_Cynic | 10-29-2008 11:38 AM | hey there,
RSS is just an xml file with the latest updates to your site. There are a ton of free plugins to set one up and it is standard in wordpress.
By proxies I mean sites where you can add your own content that links to your site.
For instance a while back if you searched for "Buy Viagra" you would have found the #18 site in google for the that term was a linked in page that had links to a viagra site.
Linked In is business social networking site where you can have a page that links to your company etc..
-- Linked in is a high PR site and the pages from that site do very well in the serps.
So the proxy technique is to just make a page on linked in or any other high PR site where you can add a page. Then throw some links at the linked in or other high PR page. That page should then rank very well for your term. When someone searches your term they will click on the proxy page and then (Hopefully) click through to your site.
It is just a way to get traffic from the serps even if your site does not rank. |
| The_Cynic | 11-04-2008 01:41 AM | A note on the coming new ebay item pages.
Current Ebay rules allow you to link out from your ebay listing to another site for added explanation on your conditions like shipping, warranty, returns etc..
-- The catch is that there cannot be ebay items for sale off that page/site that you link to.
Since ebay has a very high PR this is a free seo gift you are a fool not take advantage of.
Well, ebay switched over all my listings to their new item page over the weekend and because of that, I had a look into the code of the new page.
-On the new item page they have removed all the html and everything is in ajax, iframes and javascript. This is search engine death since the SE crawlers can't read javascript let alone ajax, and they don't read the iframes either.
So the seo value of the off ebay links from your item listings on the new pages is now zero.
Thanks ebay.
Note, they are slowly rolling the new pages, they changed my pages back the next day. |

is there anyway you can explain more how to do this as i am telling my webdesigner but he does not understand he i asking me to find out how to do it and he will do it ..
thanks mate |
| The_Cynic | 11-04-2008 11:47 AM | The yoast or bread crumb plugins rewrite urls on the fly.
what you have now is database query string for the url
This is bad for a couple reasons.
1. Search engine crawler bots can have hard time getting to your pages, when the bot hits the ? in the url, it does not know what to do.
2. Search engines give you bonus points if your URL matches or partially matches the search query. So if someone searches for
"buy xbox 360 intercooler" a url like yours
---http://www.consolemodz.com/productmain.asp?ID=98-----
will never rank as well as a url like
---http://consolemodz.com/xbox-360/xbox-360-intercooler---
If you don't want to mess the plugins you could just do rewrite on you .htaccess page too.
Any competent site designer should be able to change the urls. the plugins are free. |
| aspkin | 11-04-2008 02:35 PM | Like the URLs for this forum. :) |
| papajohns | 11-04-2008 04:58 PM | ok now i understand thanks very much that makes alot of sense thanks guys again.. |
| papajohns | 11-07-2008 09:23 AM | cynic..
i have been talking to my deisgner and we had this conversation i would be very appreciative if you could help it was about rewriting urls.
"1:what about The yoast or bread crumb plugins
2: it runs with php and not with asp
1: every website i check now have the name beside the link
unlike mine that has id 98 or something like that
it makes sense to me
2: ya but those are static website
1: what do u mean i dont understand
2: in database driven website we need to fetch data from database
so it is based on ID
1: ok but this guy tells me it is easy to do
2: see in static website there is unique page for each of your product
if possible can you ask him how to do URL rewrite in asp..if possible can u ask him this"
do u know how to rewrite the url in asp?????
thanks |
| aspkin | 11-07-2008 09:57 AM | Yes it can be done in ASP as well, but in a different way not mod rewrite.
It has to do with ISS ... I'm not sure the exact way to do it with ASP, I just know it can be done. I had an ASP site once and what a pain it was .. PHP is so much better. |
| The_Cynic | 11-07-2008 09:22 PM | I had another look at your site.
Alexa found you and you now have an Alexa rank. No biggie though, like 4 million something.
I don't have any experience with ASP, I am just now moving from using static/Iframes to PHP. However since you only have 60 or products, I think a mod rewrite via the .htaccess file would be the easiest way to fix the url problem. ( it would only take 120+ lines of code and you would not need any other site modifications from there) URL Rewriting Guide - Apache HTTP Server
- That assumes you are hosted on an apache server.
Your site designer should be able to whip it out in an hour or so.
and make sure you add the canonical rewrite so you do not get hit with duplicate content issues
I included what you need to force all pages to --www.consolemodz.com--
# And for a site running on port 80
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^www\.consolemodz\.com [NC]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^$
RewriteRule ^/(.*) http://www.consolemodz.com/$1 [L,R]
Hope that helps,
Cheers! |
| aspkin | 11-07-2008 09:27 PM | If he's on apache then sure it can be done.. but on a windows server nope. :(

| papajohns | 11-20-2008 01:49 PM | sorry just to get back to it is asp on windows server so i guess there is nothing i can do about it
or is there? |
| The_Cynic | 11-24-2008 02:05 PM | agatto2
You should do some research to see how much traffic your target keywords get. You want the keywords that get the most searches but have the least competition. This is also important if are going to buy traffic via adwords.
use this free tool Seo Book Keyword Suggestion Tool -- it will give you an idea of the search volume for you words and the competition.
Papjohns
Don't sweat the url thing too badly, the thing you should be concentrating the most on right now is getting links.
I would recommend signing up for del.icio.us , digg, mixx etc and then bookmarking a few of your pages there and maybe writing a linkbait article on your biggest selling product and then submit that to the social sites too.
BTW I hate windows servers, especially those run out of China and India. The webhosts there run on bootleg windows software that is extremely easy to hack because they can't get the security updates for their bootleg software. Never host in China or India unless they have linux servers running Apache. Because the Apache security updates are given for free. |
| Jonas | 12-08-2008 01:14 AM | mixx.com -- puts nofollow on profile homepage link
plime.com -- I register and I can't do anything, not even contact plime. It all says I must be "member level 2" and they send me no email and nothing in their help or FAQ or anything findable on google explains it.
jeqq.com -- site is dead, server won't respond, been trying for maybe 6 hours.
linkatopia.com -- links don't show up with javascript off (so they're no good for search engines) and they put nofollow on them
webshots.com -- It fools the uploader into thinking their links get links both by making straight out urls into links and HTML a hrefs into links, load this in a second browser with javscript off and cookies blocked and you'll suddenly see it doesn't make the links anymore and translates the HTML a href into plain text.
twemes.com -- This does not work for new accounts. You have to let the account sit for months before it works. I can sometimes get 1 in 10 for a new account to show up and never in a new category and never with a url link. |

Comments from the picture owner are allowed good links. Other comments are rel=noFollow. Note: flickr. et al, have rel=nofollow and links from the comments will get your account closed
Do they still let you put in live links ..... I cannot find where to put the comment for a live link. Any help appriciated |
| The_Cynic | 12-09-2008 11:32 PM | Jonas,
Thanks for the updates on those sites. It's been a while since I have used them and all the social media sites are fighting against the spammers. Some are moving to the rel=nofollow to cut down on it. I have been swamped with Christmas business so I have not had the time to get up on some new sites and tricks, but I will after Christmas. Also, I am reading that Googlebot can now read a limited amount of JS.
Jonas, Do you Know of any sites that give free good do follow links? I
agatto,
On the webshots thing. You must upload a photo first then in the comment box put ---<a href="yoursite.com">Link text to your site</a>---
When I did this, I then looked at the source code and the html link was good. They have a special <li class="owner-message"> ---</li>and the links in that were good. They may have changed it though. The links I got from my photos that I uploaded and commented on a few months ago, are still good though. |
| The_Cynic | 12-09-2008 11:54 PM | Something else. I like to do a search for "viagra" every now and then because that is one of the most competitive $$$$$ search terms on the net. Things that work to make a page rank for that phrase are guaranteed to KILL for everything else.
I found this page ranking #4 for Viagra #3 for "Buy Viagra" in Google. The ranking lasted for about a week. ( The ranking did not last because Google hand edits the results on some terms regularly.)
The page HUGEST_DISCOUNTS | Answerbag.com
It is a profile page for the answerbag. They were using the page as a proxy to drive traffic to their money sites. They must have bought a cheap xrumer clone and let it fly. Bingo, a couple days later you have a page ranking near the top for one of the most competitive on the net. (at least until the next Google hand edit)
here is the link profile for that answerbag proxy page link:http://www.answerbag.com/profile/?id=256880 -site:answerbag.com - Yahoo! Search Results
This should give you all some ideas. especially if downloaded that free comment kahuna software. |
| The_Cynic | 12-10-2008 12:09 AM | Oh, I was playing around and here is an answerbag profile page I created. The_Cynic | Answerbag.com
The links are good and if anyone wants, I will give the code to beat their rel=nofollow tagging.
Answerbag is PR 6 |
| agatto2 | 12-10-2008 05:40 AM | I'll Take that code.
How in the world did you figure out they had a come that let you buypass their no follow?
