IP Question

I have a son-in-law who is an IT professional and works for major defense contractor. So I had some questions about tracking my ip. I turned in my Mediacom modem and bought a netgear and a linksy router. So now if I turn of my netgear modem and router, the ip address on ipburger.com changes, we tried 25 times and came up with a different ip address with no repeats.

So what does this mean? I have been using this internet connection and 3 hot spots but just burnt 2 hotspots with paypal.

I am confused as to if my ip is changing constantly how will ebay and/or paypal track me?

Re: IP Question

It means your ISP uses dynamic IP's. Lucky you.

Ebay/paypal will see your IPz is dynamic so changes. (Good for you).

You willl yourself be identified by your user account & cookies. Good situation to be in. I personally have used dynamic IPs on my two most treasured accounts. Their anniversaries made double figures last yesr.

Re: IP Question

Your IP is dynamic

It can still repeat so you should still track it, but other than that your set to easily run a few accounts off the dynamic IP if you want to!

Re: IP Question

Your IT specialist son-in-law can't explain this?

Time for a new advisor.

These are my last three addresses , last three days, I went to a different site and it said I had a static IP, but I get different ip everytime I log on with ipburger?

Re: IP Question

That's your IPv6 address. At this point in the evolution of the internet you most likely have an IPv4 and IPv6 address.

Type "show my IPv4 address" into a Google search and you'll find your XX.XX.XX.XX IP address.

Re: IP Question

I'm sure at this point they're keeping track of both but I've never seen anyone linked by an IPv6 address.

Re: IP Question

Follow up question, I used a different look up service and it gave me two IP address, one v4 the other v6? The v4 is the same every time but the v6 changes. So that leads me to believe that Ebay tracks the v4? is that correct?

They're tracking both. Both IP's are automatically logged by eBay's servers when you load pages (the same is true for any website). If you went to phazors.com right now, both of your IP's and your browser fingerprint would be logged on a server which I access through my hosting account. But I would assume eBay is paying more attention to IPv4 addresses since that's still the dominant standard.

If your IPv4 address isn't changing then you could be in danger of linkage. Most ISP's don't yet issue actual IPv6 addresses, they just use one of the many IPv4 to IPv6 tunneling protocols to give you a temporary IPv6 in case you visit somewhere on the internet which is IPv6 compatible only. This is most likely why the IPv6 address you see changes every time but not your IPv4. Not because you've been given a new IP but because you restarted your connection and the tunneling protocol.
