Default New Modem...New IP address?

We got struck by lightning last night and my modem got hit. So, if I am understanding correctly, the new modem is giving me a new IP address? I have been using long distance dial up to get on Ebay. So, if I am understanding this, I can log in through my dsl.

Can anyone let me know?

Not necessarily. If you have DSL, your provider may (probably not, but check yourself) have assigned your account a STATIC address. Which means it won't change. When replacing the modem, they may have provisioned the new unit with the prior info and thus locked the IP of the old unit onto the new unit.

Usually, DSL is a DYNAMIC address, which means it changes (usually when you power it off and back on).

Just a quick question...

If you have a cable modem---- and like 10 different Routers..... Do I need to basically reset my cable modem ip address inorder to get a different ip while using each router inorder to stay under the ebay radar.

My cable modem takes several hours to reset. I rather have a bunch of routers to stay under the radar

That should work Hcruz, just make sure you're getting a new ip by checking IPBurger.com

Keep a log of your ip address.

I believe I have a static modem. But, not sure about the ip address. I think I may just leave things the way right now. This is a legit account and can't take any chances of losing it.

So, thanks. At least, I know what I will do.

You can go to START>RUN and type cmd. At the command line type
ipconfig /release
Then hit ENTER. Next, type ipconfig /renew and you should get a new IP address from the router.

If you have a cable modem, you may want to also renew its IP address. First, go ahead and release the IP address on the PC, then shut the computer down. Next, unplug the cable modem for a couple of minutes, then plug it back in again. Once all of the modem lights are green, power up the PC again. It should automatically renew its IP at boot.

Note: If you have a router, you’ll want to unplug it, as well, then plug it back in AFTER you plug in the modem, but before you power up the PC. The router will need to supply the PC with a new IP address.

Only if you don't have a router between you and the modem. If there's a router, no dice.

Not needed if you are shutting the PC down. Shutting down PC is unnecessary.

Unplug modem. Change router WAN MAC. Save change. Power off router. Power on modem. Power on router. That's it.

The router will NOT supply the PC with a new IP unless you change the MAC of your network adapter. Really, don't bother shutting down the PC.
