I use to work at a Customs broker in Los Angeles, but unless your bringing in a huge amount of merchandise and in Containers then it would be better to have a Customs Broker.
How much stuff are you trying to Import?
If you need more info or the number to the Customs Broker Private Message Me Gamefreak.

Dont get involved in customs brokers unless your dealing with containers
Marysman is correct the amount of money you spend on shipping then paying the broker to clear it.. thats so much more expensive than paying DHL as all this is done in the price.
Multiple cartons send via DHL
Anything bigger containers then you need some serious cash to invest from day 1 so you must be able to afford a shipper, if you get my principle.
hdave10 is right,it is not worth for pay over 500 usd to custom brokers for a few packages.Actually 500 usd is the basic charge for them as far as i known.
But if you are going to send over 600kgs goods by air, there is another story.
