Default DHL charging me 100% of item value in import duty & taxes

The package was marked at $30 USD value. I got my package slip from them (I wasn't at home for attempted delivery) and it indicates I owe $29 in import duty & taxes for the package!

I checked with dutycalculator.com and it says I should only owe $13!

---

I'm definitely making sure a seller/supplier never uses DHL again. I remember 3 years ago I was charged a ridiculous amount for something, but I always thought that was because the value was marked at something in the hundreds.

Luckily since then, almost all suppliers I dealt with (until now) used EMS (arrives in Canada through Canada Post) and it ALWAYS came within about 7-8 business days and I was never charged anything extra from CanadaPost

quite clearly DHL know it is not a 'gift' item and also has something to do with what the item description says.

They're not marked as 'Gift'. I never said that.

DHL also charge a fee for handling this on your behalf which may well explain the extra $$

In middle eastern countries, customs tries to stop pornography. In China and other communist countries, they look for subversive materials. In America, they are trying to stop counterfeits.

But you could ship a box of machine guns packed in cocaine to Canada as long as you pay the taxes on it!

THe OP is in Canada, the UK is on the other side of the pond, you know the big pong that start with an A and ends with a C.

Anyways, importing anything to Canada is almost true. I once imported Cuban cigars to Vancouver, Canada directly from Cuba to some family members. They would then send the cigars over mail to me.

After about 3 years of doing that, I finally got nailed by US customs for importing illegal things made in Cuba. I paid a heavy fine but I still made enough money to buy some nice things.

I only paid $25 for the cigar box, plus shipping from Canada to me and a 15% to my family member. I would usually get a few hundred for the cigar box. After the 1st year I didnt need new customers anymore, I had a nice wealthy customer base for the cigars.

With the new political talks between Cuba and the US, the prices are going to drop if the Cuban embargo gets lifted by Congress.

thank you Canada

Just checked and it's because they charged a $10 handling fee + $4 processing fee on top of the original estimate from dutycalculator.

That's just pathetic.

Call them up and tell them that they've made a mistake and they should refund you the remaining amount to you, similar thing happened to a friend of mine with UPS.
