Default Opening emails from PayPal/eBay-risky?

Can someone here please update me on the issues involved in opening emails from PayPal or eBay? I use specific computers/IP addresses/users to access my various accounts but does it matter what i'm using when I open an email from PayPal or eBay, say an email to confirm an order has just been placed, item been shipped etc? Btw I'm using Chrome and Gmail on my MacBook. I often check my Gmail on my iPhone 5 also. Thanks in advance!

As long as you never open the images they send in those emails you should be fine, you can disable open images in your email settings. You can go into each account to check that orders are marked as despatched. Same applies with iphone.

Thanks peeps. I've ticked "Ask before displaying external images" in all relevant Gmail accounts. I was concerned about the logo images embedded in the emails from PP/eBay but you say it's safe to open emails containing those only if I've ticked that box? What about the iPhone?

Same with the iPhone just go under settings find Mail and there is an option to disable images,

You just need to click that one time and any email that you add in the future will come to inbox with images Off

I have a question related to this. Although sorry if its a silly one to ask.

Is there a way to mark items as dispatched via your email without logging into PP or EB?

Also, to reply to EB messages do you click on the 'respond to this message' EB yellow button link or do you just click 'reply' in your email client?

Thanks.

No, can only be done via eBay or PayPal

To respond to the email you just reply directly to the email without clicking anything in the email.

Does anyone know how to do this in hotmail/outlook?

Gmail is fine, but hotmail , dispite clicking the block images from those no on the safe sender list (I have no one in my safe list), it still displays images from egay and payprick.

Outlook is a bit of a pain recently

You have to disable images in the browser itself (depending on which browser you use generally this is fairly easy)
