Mac address

Guys anyone know can ebay track our MAC address to link our accounts each other.I know cookies and IP is important but didn't understand if MAC address is trackable..
Thanks in advance

rsot 04-01-2011 08:57 AM

From reading forums and understanding, eb ay does not track MAC - yet.

mine 04-01-2011 09:09 AM

The only way Ebay can see your MAC address is if your comuter was directly connected the their server. They can only see the MAC address of the routers they have to connect to direct traffic to the internet. To get an idea of how many routers lie between you and Ebay, open command prompt and enter 'tracert ebay.com'.

Imakemoney 04-01-2011 09:13 AM

My understanding is that ebay doesnt not track your MAC address. However amazon does.

patojen 04-01-2011 11:37 AM

I tried command prompt and there were lots of routers between us with ebay.So it means they cant track?I think you mean there must be one router to be trackable our MAC address. But If we think so and if its correct how amazon can track there is a paradox. And if ebay can't and amazon can do it there is one explanation that ebay don't have this support.

mine 04-02-2011 08:11 AM

How was it determined that Amazon tracks MAC addresses?

lengkusoso 04-08-2011 05:30 AM

so that is a best new i heard here...

i try to change mac ip some times.but never get.

than that open cause my network down.

it is realy good news!

Not even Amazon can track MAC addresses. Not unless you allow them to run a Java applet or something of that sort on your computer. It can't even be tracked with Flash.

Imakemoney 04-13-2011 04:46 PM

^ to the above.

How do you know this? and why would so many other forum members state that they definatly can? are they wrong?

regards

mine 04-14-2011 04:10 AM

They could be wrong indeed. I have a basic understanding of TCP/IP and I think the only way for them to get your MAC address is if it was sent as data. For this to happen there would have to be software running on your PC that would send it.

I've been a network technician and programmer for many years. There are ways to get a MAC address, but it would need to be done with a Java applet or some sort of program running on the person's machine that sends the information.

Only the "hop" next to you can see the MAC address. Your Internet Service Provider (ISP) can see it, but the next hop already can't. When you send a website request, it goes through around 8-12 hops on average. If you're in the UK and eBay is in California, it goes through hops located in the UK, US East Coast, then through several major cities until it gets to California. Nobody can see your MAC address except the one right next to you, which is almost always your ISP, and certainly not eBay. For eBay to see your MAC address, you would have to be in the same building as eBay.

And I'm not aware of eBay running any Java applets on anyone's computer. And with Flash it can't be done either. Flash has no networking capabilities to that extent.

So yes, it's an "Urban Myth".

Top stuff thanks for the info.

I dont sell on amazon so ive never had issues with my MAC address however I guess it will help alot of people messing about with theirs and not to waste their time with it :amen:

imintrance 04-15-2011 01:33 AM

Ebay not track the modem's Mac address, but amazon is.
setup a new virtual pc ,use a private proxy ...that's all,you can sell on a new ebay account.

imjustme 04-15-2011 03:37 PM

I'd love to see someone explain to me how Amazon can read your MAC address.

Imakemoney 04-15-2011 04:51 PM

me too.....

willy1980 04-18-2011 02:54 AM

@imintrance you said about virtual machine... You will not have any linking from the installed operating system to the virtual machine's operating system.
I am not a geek....but i am nit with the virtual machine. I suppose that it is impossible to link them together if you will respect the instructions.

Axcend 05-20-2011 09:35 AM

I can't explain how amazon traces your Mac address but I can confirm that they linked all 10 accounts through my phone Mac address. So they must be able to somehow. And yes that is the only possible way they linked my accounts. They didn't even send me a linked email, just straight robbed them and deleted them

I am using zebra LP 2844 to print out shipping labels, the label printer requires Java app in order to print from ebay/paypal. Does that mean ebay/paypal see my MAC address every time I print shipping labels?

glacier922 08-23-2013 01:18 AM

^^

To the guy above about the zebra, I think you can just save it as a pdf and print it can't you?

Nobody can see your MAC address on the Internet. Only a pc on the same LAN as yours can see your MAC address, includes people sharing WiFi with you.

The MAC-address is part of the OSI Network Model. It's only used for communication in your local network, be it cabled or wireless.
MAC definitely gets lost is when it passes your router, the router only transmits the IP packet to "the Internet".

When connecting to the internet your router will not use your computers, but its own MAC address to forward the packets.

This switchy bit happens on all routing points, so your ISP will take your packet get the IP packet out and put it into another MAC packet and so on.

If you are using IPv6 it might be possible that your IP Address can be generated using parts of your computers MAC address and then its feasible.

Disable IPv6 if you feel paranoid.

If you read about NSA spying on us folk then its the help of the Embedded chip manufactures and ISP's and software O/S producers that pass on and allow undetectable 3 party access to our communications.

Did anyone read about " smart bins" in London streets that detect your Smartphone when you get close the bins read your smartphone data and provide a customise advert that runs on the LCD side panels when you pass it?

So if you were say looking for a Caribbean cruise on your smartphone the bin would know and show you an advert related....hehehe all without the users consent! or knowledge.

Personally I dont use smartphones/I-phones/Tablets especially with Android or Apple O/S for very reasons stated from day 1 that they were on sale.

Anything Linux pisses NSA off! and anyone else looking to creep into your private world :-)

I was in high level data comms for routing internet and encrypted data over satellite and terrestrial networks is how I know about MAC.

We used the VBI for transporting if any techies are interested how.
yep simple no overload on signal when carried.
