Question Linksys Mac Address Change...?

You can only change the last 2 digits of the mac address or you can change any of the 2 digits on the whole numeration and it will work fine? Just wanna make sure and not mess up the router configuration I got going on right now. Till now I only have been changing the last 2 digits.

i change the whole address sometimes.

if you using Technitium mac address changer and using wireless on the network there is a problem so the first two didgits should be changed from 00 to 02

You can change whatever but I only change the last 2 digits and remember you have to change to the same meaning letters to letters and numbers to numbers. Also lets say you change 22 to 23 then you dont go back to 22 till after 24 hrs later then the ip for 22 will be different again opposed to under 24hrs it will stay the same. I have comcast/netgear and thats how it works for me in my area. Hope this helps alittle

Hmm.. I always change the last 4 digits (XX XX) randomly any hexadecimal. I've never had a problem...

you must just have a short lease times.

sometimes my i.p's don't change for days and when i go back it is still the same i.p however it doesn't really matter because its under the same windows user account i used it on before so no dramas.

lease times are usually from a day up to anything like a month unless you change that in your router setting to a shorter period.

I didnt know you can change the lease period. Thats good to know as I hate it when I dont log into a certain account within 24hrs and it changes the ip. I like all of my accounts to have a designated ip and it stays the same for each account...to me it is just another way to make all my accounts look more legit and secure but also I know many ip setups change everytime no matter what so it probably means nothing except to me..thanks for the info tho

Ok, so I actually found this fairly easily. I have a Linksys router as well.

I just logged into the router as usual. (192.XXX.X.X) The "Client Lease Time" is right on the main page towards the bottom. A ctrl+f will take you right to it. I changed mine to 3000 minutes to see what happens... The router reset itself and the internet after I saved the setting.. I'll report back if my IP address last longer now.

I have netgear like I stated earlier and this can not be done on my particular router. There is no lease time in any of the settings. I called netger they came to the same conclusion of that the DHCP server is hard wired or something and its at default 24hrs and can not be changed..further research seems maybe possible but extremely complicated..can you guys update whenever you get a chance if the linksys is in fact working for the new lease designated time. Thanks

You do NOT need to change your router's MAC address, they cannot see it unless you are DIRECTLY connected to Amazon or eBay's computers.

i don't use either router, but on some net-gears, like you say do not have that option, WGR614 for example

You might/should still have a reg file on your computer to edit.

if your talking about extending, well thats easy but if the net-gear is no go then you might need to change the router if it really matters.

most router have full c block assignment (254 ip addresses) DHCP clients normally request a lease renewal when 50% of the lease time has expired

So what i do is set mine to 7 days and switch the router off every night to make sure it never expires until such time i need to change it

I changed my lease time on my linksys, but it doesn't seem to be keeping IPs any longer...
