How to EASILY change IP address with various cable services
 

Ok so I am a vet stealther that is why I am posting this in the subscriber forums.

I just moved to a new state and new apartment complex, and beforehand I had AT&T DSL internet which was easy to change your IP because all I had to do was direct connect the modem to my laptop, turn off the modem, and then turn it back on and boom it was another IP. REALLY easy.

It looks though that I cannot do that with the AT&T Uverse, which is the only AT&T option at the new apartments I just moved into.

What are my options? If I go to Time Warner how do I easily change the IP address?

I have read before that I can use a wireless router and change it, however when I had Time Warner before and a Belkin router, it was extremely difficult to change it. I had to go log into all this stuff, jump through all these steps, restart it, and whatnot. It is definitely not practical for someone that is having to switch IP's nightly to log into different accounts.

I will switch to Time Warner obviously because I HAVE to be able to switch the IP address regularly. If anyone could tell me how you do it I would greatly appreciate it. Also, if you know a specific router with an easy way to keep changing it I will go out and buy it today. Thanks for the help stealthers!

Moblie broadband is fast becoming the best tool as far as IP changing is concerned.

I use a rooted android based phone with barnacle wifi tether. Easily change IP by turning airplane mode on and then off;)

These are interesting ideas, but again just a little too intricate for someone who isn't using a lot of mobile stuff.

I just signed up for Time Warner DSL internet today, they told it was a Dynamic IP.

If someone could put themselves in my shoes and tell me what I should do now to be able to change an IP address quickly say 3 times a night to log into different accounts I would appreciate it.

I can buy a new router, do whatever money isn't an issue. Seriously, if it takes a $200 router I will buy it. The issue is the current router I have (Belkin 54G) takes FOREVER to change the IP address. You have to unhook the router from the modem, plug the router into your computer, go to the homepage, change the mac address, reset the router, reset the modem, sometimes it will kick out the internet so you have to start all over. Its a ridiculous pain in the ass.

For a non techie person who has been using a phone to tether and getting duplicate numbers this is nothing.

I am now using both methods and can tell you I put the router at the toolbar, click it, change the mac, unplug both, wait 30 seconds plug them both in and I am up and running with a brand new number every single time. So far no duplicates and easy as pie.

Takes me less then a minute to complete it all and be running.

Why did you go out and sign up for Time Warner? :pout:

Thread is a tad pointless if you have already made choices that are going to be not so good for your purposes. Sighs. Patience is needed even for veteran stealthers ;)

Set up a lynkis with the time warner, cant really explain it that well but thats why I did to get around it with TW. I believe Vicvelrco had a good post if you search on how to do it but he likes other old schoolers are mia.

download the aol program create an aol login ( if you don have on already)

goto advanced then change the way it logs into aol from broadband to @home this will make it give you an aol ip now when you login aol you will get an aol ip ie 172.x.x.x and its different everytime you login

This might be of use for someone who doesnt want to use dialup etc

mobile internet is the best way to go. Ip changes just by connecting.

I use dongle and iphone 4G hotspot. At the moment I still like that dongle as it re-sets ip with 2 clicks of the mouse. Maybe I am just getting used to the hotspot and others have better things to say. Sometimes the computer has issues recognizing the iphone and re-start is needed. Overall though very stealthy..

Problem is I only really have two options, AT&T Uverse and Time Warner in my area. Nothing more. Time Warner is the only one that you can even manipulate it with a router, I don't believe you can even do that with UVerse.

Any help with changing it quickly with a router?

I'm just confused how to hook up the router so I can easily access the MAC address and then change it. What do you mean by toolbar? What router works best? Thanks

I think broadband + wireless router is faster.


Log in to user account, then fire up Firefox with saved tabs of Ipburger + Router page. Wait 5-8 seconds for the Router MAC to automatically change, and new ip ( or previous IP, depending on the lease )

What type of router works well? The one I have is a Belkin and its a huge pain. Any model number of the Linkseys thats the easiest to change?

I'm using Encore ENHWI-N. It's cheap and fast and offers a lot of features. I use the MAC method to change ip. I'm on earthlink broadband with this wireless router attached to modem.
BTW, earthlink played the bait-and-switch game with me. I'm gonna punish them for that. Careful if you deal with them.

I dont know what router is best, not being a techie.

I think most of the to name brand routers are going to be ok.

I am down to 30 seconds and a new IP.
