Browser fingerprinting is a reality.

It is not new and has been known about for a long long time. Are there commercially available applications that companies are currently using? Quite probably

Are e/b & p/p using them? Quite probably

However I would say that if they were to any great extent using them then stealth would pretty much be dead in the water now.

People get so wrapped up in looking over their shoulder for e/b & p/p catching them out and that is the key phrase, "catching them out"

Part of their business it to minimise risk and detect fraud as we all know, that is for everyones protection. For your account to come under scrutiny in the normal course of events would imply that you have become a 'risk' in some way or a transaction may appear to be fraudulent, then they look closer.

If your account is run well and professionally then that scrutiny is less intense and in all probability you will never know your account has been 'under review'

If on the other hand your account is not run well or professionally then the scrutiny is more intense and you will know that your account is 'under review'

What I'm trying to say in a very long winded way is concentrate on running your business well and at all times remember the most important part of Aspkin's guide.

STAY UNDER THE RADAR

If you don't it doesn't matter a hill of beans how you set up your account or which bank and vcc you used because you won't have it any more.

Win XP was never secure from day one anyway!

Do Microsoft even still support it?

Good find GT but your still way safer with a Mac :thumb:

This is a Java based applet that MAY POSSIBLY infect a Mac. However as long as the latest version of Java is installed it can not compromise the machine.

Also it cannot self execute in the way that as similar viruses can on Windows machines and does require the user to accept a certificate that is purportedly sent by Apple but Apple never send such certificates and I would guess most Mac users know this.

Just in case you are hit by it, heres how to remove it

Disinfection

Manual Removal

Caution: Manual disinfection is a risky process; it is recommended only for advanced users. Otherwise, please seek professional technical assistance.

Manual Removal Instructions

1. Run the following command in Terminal:

defaults read /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment

2. Take note of the value, DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES
3. Proceed to step 8 if you got the following error message:

"The domain/default pair of (/Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info, LSEnvironment) does not exist"

4. Otherwise, run the following command in Terminal:

grep -a -o '__ldpath__[ -~]*' %path_obtained_in_step2%

5. Take note of the value after "__ldpath__"
6. Run the following commands in Terminal (first make sure there is only one entry, from step 2):

sudo defaults delete /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info LSEnvironment

sudo chmod 644 /Applications/Safari.app/Contents/Info.plist

7. Delete the files obtained in steps 2 and 5
8. Run the following command in Terminal:

defaults read ~/.MacOSX/environment DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES

9. Take note of the result. Your system is already clean of this variant if you got an error message similar to the following:

"The domain/default pair of (/Users/joe/.MacOSX/environment, DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES) does not exist"

10. Otherwise, run the following command in Terminal:

grep -a -o '__ldpath__[ -~]*' %path_obtained_in_step9%

11. Take note of the value after "__ldpath__"
12. Run the following commands in Terminal:

defaults delete ~/.MacOSX/environment DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES

launchctl unsetenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES

13. Finally, delete the files obtained in steps 9 and 11.
