VPN / VPS Best Practices Guide?

I've recently moved to China and I'd like to set up an ebay-stable VPN or VPS, I'm not sure which.

Sadly, many of the websites I'm reading on the subject require a BS in Computer Engineering to understand what the heck they're trying to say.

If someone could help me out with this topic with a layman's guide to the VPN/VPS setup process, what to look for when buying one for stealth purposes, and how to do this right the first time it would be very helpful.

Unless you know how to set up Linux, I would go with a Windows VPS. Yes, the ARE more expensive. I would use a provider that is smaller, and unknown to eBay. Forget the $10 - $15 ones. eBay/Amazon finds all of those - this is not an area to be cheap.

Avoid VPN.

Avoid that.

A well choosen VPS will do wonders for you.

As you look, avoid anything on the front page of GOOGLE.... every other stealther in the world has 'grabbed' them.

I replied to your other thread about having a beer. Look at your network of friends. There will be an IT expert ( somewhere) that could help.

Follow jeffweico's advice. Keep in mind good & therefore successful will cost.

VPS is the better of the options. Layman's guide can be googled - few posts out in the forum (search VPS) will steer you in right direction. All the best

Like RSOT said, go to page 10 of the search results, the first few pages are known by eBay/Amazon.

Don't be cheap! The $15 Windows VPS providers are overused and known to eBay/Amazon.

$30 - $40 is a realistic price point for a good VPS provider. Of course, just because they charge that amount does not automatically make them a good provider. Try to find some reviews if you can. At the end of the day, it is still a roll of the dice.

Go to your own social network.

See if anyone you know uses VPS.

Find out first hand from them if possible.

As always, before you commit to anything, check the fine print.

Be aware of making a wise choice.
