I'm selling a lot of Japanese-related anime, game and other Japanese geek/otaku culture items so I've got a pretty big profit margin as they're fairly difficult to get in the west. Actually % are all over the place - sometimes I hit a product that sells for double, triple retail value for months - sometimes I end up overstocking something and losing money by the end.
It's not my main job, I'm otherwise employed here, but it's a very nice bit on the side that's easy enough to do online and just forward stuff on to foreign countries.

On my new commodity merchandise, I average 25%. On my used (rare) books, it is much higher but it varies widely. I have made sales at 50 times my purchase price, although that is fairly rare. I would say 100% on the used books overall.

the person that said 2000% how is that possible unless you are the manuafacturer, or it is vero? even if you have an exclusive deal - that % is a tall order.
I have found that I have the same supplier as other people, and this constant reduction game makes us all poorer but in the end everyone wants to be the one that makes the sales...I will not go lower than 25%. I have missed out on a huge amount of selling due to not wanting to go lower and not listing those items....can someone help me break this psychology or am I right???

Very interesting and hard question to answer. I rarely use my own money to invest in inventory or anything really, so I guess my margin is PURE profit because other than skill and a little time(I don't do much busy work myself at all these days such as shipping, listing, etc..) I have no skin in the game. That being said I could easily sell millions of dollars and only get to keep personally 10% of it....
Now for actual cash on cash return, a true ROI on items I do use my personal money on I have a very strict guideline. It is in the several hundreds of percent and fast return on 30 days or less with cost being paid back within 14 days.
This question is irrelevant in my honest opinion. There is so many ways of having infinite ROI

It takes a very long time to find a good product that sells well for decent margins.

My margins typically range from 50% to 200%. Just depends on how hot that items is at the moment. I don't sell illegal vero items, I am just willing to put the work in myself and sometimes hire help to fix the items that I sell.

Margins depend on my product being sold - I dont always have big margins but the enjoyment of sending out and making some $ is fun for me |

I sell some times that are 1500% ROI, but they are custom made and the buyers is paying a large premium to get them ASAP
