Yes, make sure you track your IP addresses as well to prevent any linking.

Im assuming you have the stealth guide, there is a nice screenshot of an excel spreadsheet showing how to track your IP effectively. Its very important, especially now when everything is new, that you manage and organise everything very carefully. One mishap and you will be regretting it.

Have you tried turning the router off for 10 seconds and turning it back on again?

Generally this is the easiest method but Virgin Media can be a bit tricky sometimes.

In which case you have a sticky IP address.

Which Virgin Media router are you using?

If it is the super hub have a look at this - http://www.aspkin.com/forums/ip-addr...super-hub.html

If you are able to log into the router to change the MAC address then that is the best method.

Other options are to use a dongle or phone tethering

Which part of the MAC are you changing?

Best part to change is one of the last digits from say a 6 to a 7. The router will then need resetting so that it pulls in a new IP address.

To keep things simple just unplug the whole lot.

You say old...depending on how old, I remember virgin media gave me a cable modem and separate router. In which case you would need to power down that modem and restart to get a new ip.

Or you may have just the netgear router which they released prior to superhub, which basically is modem/router combined.

Try changing mac address, last digits as JamesNorth101 stated, and restart your router after saving settings.

Try to also keep your router powered down for a few minutes, unplug from mains, see if that helps.

My internet also has this sticky ip problem, I use BT Fibre Optic, as a result I just use phone tethering myself, it saves time and hassle.

Literally just switch on the wifi hotspot on my phone and use it, as oppose to login to router, change mac, restart, anticipate the possibility that it wouldnt change the ip so process needs to be done all over again... Just a pain for some ISP's.
