Amazons new request for ID to creat accounts, UTR/Passport
 

It seems to be very difficult to go stealth on amazon now because they are asking for a UTR number which is a unique taxpayer ref. Anyone come across this ?? Seems to have happened over the last few days.

Anyway around it ?

and if you set up a person account they want to verify who you are. This is all new.

They are asking for Passport or driving licence

You come across as a jerk. Pointless posts I guess are a matter of opinion, but I have read a lot of your posts and honestly, MOST come across the same way and oftentimes exceedingly irrelevant to the thread bordering inaccurate. To me, a sour attitude and edgy posts are pointless. To each there own I guess.

I'm new to this forum and I appreciate all the advice here. If you have a question about virtually anything dealing with online business, the users in this forum have the answer. Making snide remarks towards any user in this forum is not only arrogant and pointless, it's disrespectful.

And as far as AZ requesting passport or DL information, I have not experienced this. I just started a new account and provided an EIN and wasn't asked for anything more than that as far as the tax part of the process is concerned.

UK and USA differ in certain way on both Amazon and eBay

The OP is talking about a change of requirements for amazon uk.

Appears to be something sprung on the UK sellers.

My main worry is the UTR.

Am checking at the moment to see what will benefit sellers ( or not).

basically for a personal account they want to check you live at an address by doing similar to a credit check. For business they want a company number or self assessment number. Stealth seems to be difficult now.

Not an email its on there page when you try and open an account.

did they ask for passport info by emaiL?

if not why do you mention that they want passport?

as mentioned it is when you go and open a new seller account, apparently it will need to be faxed in but as I haven't done it yet and only put in stealth details they may come back and just reject the account before one is requested.

Worse thing is this is just for a personal account, in reality we need a business account hence a UTR

The US and UK are different. We have the SSN/EIN issue to deal with here in the US. The UK had nothing similar to deal with. Apparently, that is changing. It is the nature of the beast. Stealth now is very different from what it was five years ago.

Each county has it's own challenges. In the UK, obtaining a bank account is more difficult than it is here in the US. In Australia, they have an anti-money laundering law to deal with that requires identity verification at the $1,000 level. Here in the US, Amazon will require a tax-id number (SSN or EIN) when you have more than 50 sales, even though the law says they must verify this when you have more than 200 sales and over $20,000 in revenue.

I can guarantee you that new procedures will be put into place from time to time. We will either find workarounds or give up. The best place to find out about such changes is right here.

Also as another point amazon also require you to add a bank account once you open the account. Previously this needed to be done only 3 days before the first withdrawal of funds was possible.

Update: a.v limited is either talking rubbish. Or they only asked him for passport because they saw something dodgy

I made account on amazon.co.uk today and they NEVER asked for passport or UTR (private acc made) using gift card

I have opened several accounts and been running without any information like that being requested. I have also NEVER been asked for this kind of info. Why are talking about credit checks....credit checks are for exactly that...credit.

If it's happened to you then fair enough and maybe it can be figured out but that doesn't mean everyone opening a uk account is going to be asked for ID and address verification. Like I say have opened accounts no problem.

Just fear mongering. Seems to be little evidence that it has happened to anyone else.

opened with gift card, like I normally do. I open 5 a day normally. No difference to what is normally done. Creating rumours ???? What are you on ??

what account did you open ? buyer or seller. If seller, individual or a business ? which business ?

One person has said otherwise. Have you tried it ?

I'm afraid I cant show you business listing as only comes up when you create a new account, can only show you status of current account, when I create a new business account I will show you but at the moment it is clear in the UK they do ask for a registered business number

Amazon payments is where your problem is at

Amazon payments is a payment processor for personal wesbties, so i expect that to require additional security.

Dont subsribe for amazon payments

Well i have made account and did not come across this problem. You say they asked you this straight away as soon as you made account?

Did anyone else make new ebay uk account after 21/02/2014 with uk address?

I have opened 2 accounts and same thing. This is only screen shot I can show as other show no relevance now account has been attempted to be opened.

That gollin has tried it and same thing. Anyone else ?

Bigger issue is to sell we need a business account, sole trader, but then it asks for a UTR. That is real issue
