Default 30,000 Sellers Suspended in 2008! WOW

I was reading an article about how Ebay Suspended 30,000 sellers in 2008 just for VERO items. This is not counting feedback manipulation or other violations.
I wonder what percentage of the sellers are innocent and wrongly accused.

I think the Vero Companies (Tiffany) should stop putting pressure on Ebay and go directly to the main source where the counterfeits are produced. It's like you keep arresting drug addicts and letting the Drug Dealers off.

Here is the link to the full story.

As hearing approaches, eBay claims 2.1 million counterfeit items delisted in 2008 | The Industry Standard

"Internet auction site eBay has defended the way in which it handles reports of counterfeit goods, saying that it has delisted millions of items and suspended tens of thousands of seller accounts last year. However, its actions may not be enough to stop a lawsuit brought by a luxury goods retailer, which maintains that eBay needs to do more to stop online auctions of counterfeit products.

Ebay's comments relate to the Tiffany v. eBay lawsuit (PDF), which will soon be heard by the U.S. Court of Appeals. At the heart of the dispute is a disagreement over which party should bear the responsibility for identifying counterfeit products offered in eBay listings.

Tiffany brought the suit against the online auction site. The luxury retailer (and some other companies involved in the case as amici curiae) believe that eBay should be responsible for policing the site. This is a daunting task -- the site has approximately 26 million live listings worldwide at any given time, and sees about 2.7 billion live listings globally over a year.

EBay spokesperson Nicola Sharpe spoke with The Industry Standard about eBay's policies regarding sales of counterfeit items, and the tools the company has put in place to help protect consumers as well as help rights owners protect their brands. The Verified Rights Owner (VeRO) program cited in the decision was instituted in 1998, and gives rights owners tools to find and report instances of counterfeit item listings found on the site.

Sharpe notes that 100 percent of reported listings are removed, with 70 to 80 percent removed within 12 hours. Site policy has zero tolerance for sellers who list counterfeit items, and will also suspend any seller who lists a counterfeit item more than one time. Background information is also used to prevent sellers from creating a new profile and re-listing items. Sharpe reports that 2.1 million listings were removed in 2008 based on VeRO reports, and 30,000 sellers suspended.

As Sharpe, explains, eBay never has physical possession of the items in question, and with the number of listings processed through the site annually, policing counterfeit goods would be impossible. The company's Trust and Safety Department is dedicated to site safety, and includes interaction with law enforcement, and dealing with online fraud as well as issues surrounding counterfeit goods. Sharpe shares eBay's take:

"Collaboration is key. We aren't the experts, obviously, and need to partner with rights owners."

In the past four years, participation in eBay's VeRO Program has increased from approximately 16,000 rights owners to 31,000 currently. Work is currently underway to improve the speed in which reported listings are removed, as well as improve the online tools available to rights owners.

The Internet has provided companies with a global marketplace available 24 hours a day, a boon for sales, but also a detriment to enforcement of product authenticity and trademark ownership. The immediacy of online sales demands a new model for companies to manage rights."

To funny....
Quite a few of those were mine.
My virtual cemetery under my desk is pretty full of bodies shot full of VERO bullets.

If eBay would require people to put a reason as to why an item violates trademark or copyright then those violations would probably be cut in half.

reporting other sellers doesnt always work. I know some sellers who sell digital goods, and ive reported them and nothing happends. The reason being that the auction description is totally fine and flawless, and says the item will be shipped via usps. Yet if u look at the guys feedback, u see ppl saying "wow that was fast, got the item im 30 minutes".

However, if you get a bunch of sellers to report 1 particular seller, then your on to something. They may remove it even if theres nothing really wrong with the auction. Its like, they will go out of their way to find a reason to remove it. I once had an auction removed because it said "fast and reliable" in the subtitle. That was the reason..crazy.

This may sound a bit weird But im glad that ebay has a vero program even though its severly flawed. If ebay was like ioffer us "true vero" sellers would be out of business. There is no way we could compete with the chinese.

I don`t think everybody is as happy as you with the vero program. But with selling real stuff you don`t have to keep making ebay accounts. It cuts your profits but saves you time.

actually that is a really good point, we can only exist selling vero because of how tough it is, in a way.

Default good point

O.k

You have a good point here. I didn't really think about that. I sell 80% real, but i have 2 accounts where is sell make up i sold for over 8 months only real stuff. Than i found a supplier in Taiwan that sold the same product line but than ⊗⊗⊗⊗. I took it to a couple makeup store and the old told me it was real. Since than i just mix it with the real stuff. I make 70% more on the ⊗⊗⊗⊗ stuff, but this is makeup if you talk about electronics it`s a lot harder to copy that. I sold for a couple months some Bose items but that cost me more than 10 accounts, keep spending time on making accounts not really a good plan. And with Stealth accounts it`s hard to let customers return there item. So you will lose your money and your product. If your sure about the quality go for it, otherwise take my advise and do not spend a $ on it.

Some put also a return address label with items when they ship out.

Default Not a dropshipper

No i have a supplier in Taiwan, i still ship everything from my home here in Canada. I never worked with drop shippers, but maybe a smart idea to start with. I print my labels still with paypal, but maybe smart to stop with this and just add my own address on the package. Saves me time to because now i go to 6 different post offices everyday to drop orders from all my accounts. Thanks for the tip

Do you have a pickup service from your PO.

USPS will pickup up any amount of parcels from my house with only one having to be priority mail. The rest can be whatever.

I do my postage online and then have my postman pick up for me in the morning.
