Breaking News! Ebay will have to start collecting State tax from all sellers

The Supreme Court ruling today just empowered States to collect tax from online sellers, even if they don't have a physical presence in hat State.

Man this is going be a big burden on some of us.

That wont actually help. It is for all 45 other states that you ship to, no longer your physical location.

Time will tell if it effects us little guys. It will be interesting to see what mess congress comes up with.

Hmmmm... Are you suuuure? I hope we won't have to pay tax to every state D: Just assumed that every state will be gleaning off each other now i.e. you'll pay your states' tax rate on all your orders regardless where they go.

What you were describing before was the current law. This is new last week. Sales taxes for all 45 states. That is why it is a big to do.....Now congress actually has to pass a law now. The only company who wanted this is Amazon. They chose to collect sales tax for all 45 states two years ago even thought they dont operate in all 45 states. Ebay and Etsy supposedly will have a bit of a hand in this just like ebay did in the 1099K law and raised the threshold to what it is.
It is very likely that small businesses will be exempt OR ebay and amazon etc...will actually collect and pay the sales taxes like Amazon does now.

No matter what, end users cost just sky rocketed. Hopefully small businesses will be saved and it will make consumers focus on buying from us compared to amazon but who knows......

How'd we go from talking about the 5 states that don't have sales tax to the 45 that do. Course they do! lol

Where this is headed - the states with larger influences in the online market will start bringing in more sales tax, leaving the smaller states to suffer. Now that there's a cross-state-line level playing field, states who want to stay relevant are going to start upping their sales taxes - and probably exponentially. Not good.

Y'know, VPNs should technically qualify as presence with the new terms being applied to the nexus. You are technically connecting to the internet from a virtual location in order to conduct business...
