OK. so I've come across this a few times recently.
It seems like there is a trend in ebay scams - quite a lot recently, where a chinese ebay seller sells on ebay at prices that seems too good to be true.
Ie. Iphone 8 plus 256gb at £30.
Dewalt 5ah batteries x 2 at £30
Obviously when it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
I had seen sellers who offers these items and within a matter of days, their account gets banned.
My question is, surely there is no way they can get away with it? correct me if i am wrong, unless they have an established account with established paypal account attached and quickly withdraw the money?
What are your thoughts, it must be working for them if they keep on doing it? is it just ebay that is out of pocket then? as ebay must refund you in any case...

they could have hacked into other sellers' account and enter their Paypal account email address in the listing, since the item is too good to be true,it would be sold and paid for quickly before anyone finds out.
or they set up a new seller account and hope Ebay would not catch them soon enough, and their paypal account is in good standing for them to transfer the fund, they could claim the item is in USA and upload a USPS priority shipping label .
OR the seller works for some retailers or wholesaler and intends to buy or steal from their employers

Yep, some accounts get compromised and people list things at prices way below market value.
Remember buying 6 brand new Playstation 3's for $50 a piece thinking I could turn a $200 profit on each when I first started on Ebay. Few days later the order was canceled and got a message saying it was a fluke.
I'm guessing they try to transfer the funds out of PP asap since compromised accounts might not have withdraw limits.
It was disappointing.

Very amazing to think back to how much trust was involved with regards to money orders and cash in the mail.

Yea, this is the usual scam at eBay. Usually, Below £50.00 you'll get the funds instantly, sometimes PayPal hold it, sometimes not. It's so easy to create seller accounts with 5/500 listing limits and use for this modus operandi.

In the early days you did not even have to offer paypal as a seller so folk were 'buying' 5 playstations for $30 each any paying by Western Union etc.
It only started to get manageable when sellers were forced to offer paypal, buyer protection was beefed up and ebay+paypal started putting restrictions in place.

Often times we get frustrated with all the rules and regulations around eBay, but in truth if they didn't enforce tight rules, eBay wouldn't be around today.

Back then their credibility was down the drain, and their future was at jeopardy. I don't see that to be the case anymore. Especially given buyers are protected a lot more with buyer protection.
Sucks for sellers sometimes, but on the whole its a win win for everyone.

Well, known scam method.
it is basically very simple, and it works great as long as refunds are provided.
Basically, you buy verified PayPal online and create an eBay account with that. You list an item for like 50$. The item gets listed (obviously not something risky).
A buyer comes and buys this item. You ship them garbage or put a ⊗⊗⊗⊗ tracking number. Buyer requests refund after a while, and the seller already bought BTC or something with the money. PayPal accounts go negative, Buyers get his money back, and sellers also get free BTC.
if you are clever enough you can automate all of that and make quick stolen cash. don't try it kids! you will risk people coming to your door wanting the money.

you are also allowed to bid on your own auction.
You can even collect dead beats by calling them or sending them a post card at end of the year and some will pay

Well, not everyone is as savy nor experienced as some. The question of them being dumb or not really isn't the issue.

Isn't this the purpose of paypal holds on initial sales? To prevent trash like that from getting free money...
