Let's say I have 100 widgets that I paid a dollar for and want to sell them for $5. If I listed them for .50 cents and sold 20 of them, and then changed the price to $6 would it still show 20 sold? It seems like when I sell a few items that I have had listed for 3 months, I immediately get a bunch more sales.
Do people really tend to buy items that show a lot sold?
Just a thought

Never tried that. Interesting logic.
Not too difficult to try that out on your own and give us all the answer.

Just a thought | yes this always works and its very good technique been trying on ebay from years and years
by the way you cant list less then 99 cent so .50$ will not work |

Yes
I have never tried it and figured someone else had, not directed at you cause I discount pretty much EVERTHING you say.

One day, you might actually have to know something.

Just a thought | Yes, it's similar to the popular loss-leader system. It's so old on eBay it's not even a trick anymore.
Just ask the Chinese
I think people tend to buy from the most popular listings, at least I know I do.
The more items you sell, the more eBay drives your listings to the top of the search results assuming you meet many other requirements.

buyers will search lowest item and shipping price ,so if your item shows up on the first page and it shows many sold ,a buyer tends to think your item is better .
some will click on your feedback .

Update
I just lowered the price of one of my items that I have only sold 2 of that was $10.99. I lowered it to $1.99 (will still make money). Curious to see if units sold increases. Will keep this updated if it works. Seems to be if you sell a lot of something it will rise in the listing seen.

If you sell a lot of items fast eBay thinks customers want that item and so you do better in the search results which is why you sell more.
If you want to be ranked higher its easy to sell 10 or so items at cost price to get a good ranking and then change the price to your actual one.

You really ARE a beginner, aren't you. Wow.
If you've dropped your price 80% and still don't get sales, you have a horribly UNpopular product on your hands.

Sold 2 so far today. My items sell pretty fast so I usually list my $1 items at $10 and my $3 items at $30. Trying a new niche and just trying to increase sales of that one (my 5th ebay) to catch up with the other 4s $18,000 a year.

So, I don't think you really understand just how fast items can actually sell on eBay.
If you reduced your price 80 some percent, and have only sold 2-4 in a day... that's not what we call "selling pretty fast".
But I DO wish you luck on your new niche. |

Just a thought | ABout the last question, yes offline. Scarcity hikes the demand.
However if it's a product no one wants then no one will buy.
But I'd say try your strategy
