Buyer returned item and I filed appeal. eBay said I can sign affidavit ...what's this

eBay said I need to sign a affidavit and I get my money back.
Buyer sent the item back in horrible condition..
Is this safe to do? Or will it hurt my account

All I did was appeal the return,wrote a paragraph, took a pic..
And they sent me a message to sign a affidavit and upload it.

Is this a new process?
Does the buyer still get their money? Or does eBay overturn it?
Does eBay just pay me out of its own pocket? (Technically mine because I pay them a ton in fees)

Any thoughts?
I don't want to get my acc suspended for anything weird.

Since EBAY cannot tell who is telling the truth,so it wants you to sign affidavit to show you are telling the truth then it probably will deny the buyer claim ,or in some cases if buyer has proof you sent damaged item,it could just reimburse your buyer out of its own pocket.
or if buyer files a charge back,ebay may pay or just make you pay?.
without signing affidavit,you will lose the case .
Ebay will also keep track of your buyer,if he keeps doing this,his buying privilege will be suspended as he is a risk to Ebay seller community !!!

I have done this in the past and it helps your claim against the buyer and is not adverse to your account.

I can't help but wonder if it was actually taken back from the buyer or if eBay out of pocket

it depends on the evidence you presented,yours and his reputation and how much it would cost Ebay.
When a FLORIDA shop which sold a high end antique watch $47K and the buyer returned an empty box,it called the police and open the box in front of him, file a police report,then call eBAY ,it was told to refund in 3 days and take it up with the carrier Fed Exp/
See eBAY is not going to eat $47K.

just make sure it doesn't happen often at all.

the affidavit is fine, but it can be used against you in the future if it happens too often
