Default Proper way to return an item on eBay?

I just got an item and it is definitely not as the seller described it. I just contacted the seller. Assuming that he does contact me back and agrees to a return, do I still open up an "item not as described" case on eBay so that eBay knows that the item is being returned?
The complete step-by-step guide to get back to selling today!

To me it would depend on the price of the item and how badly the description was misrepresented.

I would 1st get the sellers phone number with "Find contact information" through eBay and talk to them. Look at their feedback also.

Give the seller a chance to make this right before a full blown dispute.

$380.00

I am not looking to open a full blown dispute. I just do not want to agree to a return, send it back, and then have the seller say that I never sent it or something like that.

Their feedback is 95 at 100% over eight years.

Ensure it is not buyers' remorse.
Re-read seller's Return Policy. (Make sure there is room to bargin & that will include shipping costs)
Contact seller. Use ebay as suggested by TGMT
Discuss matter with seller.
Attempt resolution.
Put a time frame of say 5 days (unless there's a public holiday due)
In the resolution, if seller says send it back, state it is only coming back signed sealed delivered or some way that the seller must personally take the item.
Hope this works.
If above does not work, then you go to the next level. Tell ebay.( Advise on that is extra)

Yeah, if it's clearly not as described. If it's just not what you expected, no need to drag PP into things. See the seller helps to correct the situation first.

It is not buyers remorse. I am actually out looking for another similar item as we speak. It is a hobby collectible that was listed as being in new condition, and was even confirmed as being in new condition when I contacted the seller before bidding. Well, the item sent to me was clearly used, and has damage to prove it.

Hmm, I detect a little defensiveness here.
Not personal but be careful of that interpretation 'in new condition'. I know from the items I sell that there is (rightly so ) a difference. Often that can mean it has had some usage but still looks pretty darn good and might just fool the buyer. SO if you consider on comparison with the photos the item does differ then tell the seller that..
