Check with IPBurger and see what it says your IP Address is. This is the one that eBay sees.
From what I've read, the IP only needs a change of one number.

i unpluged by BT homehub router overnight for 12 hours but my IP address did not change so found out how to change it manually in the local are connection > properties.
I only changed the last digit as i was worroed i would loose connection to the internet, is just changing the last digit of you IP address sufficiant to stop ebay from tracking you?

Has anyone had any experience with changing an IP address on an AT&T U-Verse gateway (TV, Internet, Phone). AT&T tech support is telling me that it can't be done, but I'm sure they are saying that to prevent hackers and such.

Thanks,

It's kind of a unique setup. Let me outline what I have, and maybe you/someone can help.
  • I have AT&T U-Verse, which provides TV over IP, Internet, and VOIP (Phone).
  • The main line comes in just like my previous DSL installation, and comes into a residential gateway.
  • The gateway has several ports (see attached image)
  • Of these ports; TV, CPUs, and phone can be connected to it.
  • Due to my many connection needs, I do have a Belkin router connected to in to facilitate my additional computers.
  • The coaxial connection is for connecting through standard coax, instead of ethernet.

Now; I have taken a look at the gateway setup, and there isn't any way to change/spoof the MAC address, so this isn't an option. Even if I could; the service would probably cease. I would have to call in the new MAC address to resume service, and also bring attention to myself from AT&T.

I have the Belkin router, but I don't see how this will help, since the gateway pulls the IP address that is seen globally.

Any assistance will be greatly appreciated.

If you can change your mac address when you login to your router, your ip address should change if you unplug your router and modem and plug them back in. I'm not very familiar with Belkin routers sorry.

Ok, so let me get this straight...

Even though my U-Verse gateway receives the "real" WAN IP (76.219...), and distributes private IPs (192.168...) to TVs, CPUs, and routers; I can change the MAC address on my router (or buy a new one), and be able to change the WAN IP set at the gateway? This doesn't seem correct, but I'll sure as heck try tonight.

SevnSins, your setup is difficult...

If you are just managing ONE eBay/PayPal account sure take the time to reset your IP address, which by the looks of it will be a pain. If you're working with multiple accounts, you might want to look into dialup, or a secondary ISP.

I would think it would be just like using a modem and router. Try using a different MAC Address and see what happens...nothing to lose.

I took the time to call AT&T back, and this support person confirmed that I DO have a dynamic IP configuration on my U-Verse account. She also stated that dynamic is standard, except for commercial accounts that MUST maintain their IP. With this said; I will continue turning off my gateway at night, and hope someone takes over my IP. I will also attempt the MAC address change on my router, and boot the gateway up with just the router connected. I will post back with my results.

Quick Question:

On my company laptop, I have access to my company VPN. I connect, went to whatsmyipaddress.com, and still had the same IP as if I were at home. How does the VPN workaround work? Does it cloak my home IP because I'm connected to the VPN?

Cloak? No, it's a direct connection to your work's servers, which then routes you to the internet. If you were still on your old IP address, you weren't connected through your work's VPN.

Thanks Aspkin.

I just tried it again, and I was able to get a new IP by way of my VPN at my current location. I'm not at home, so I will run another test tonight.
