Activity: 0% Longevity: 64% | | Install windows 10 to dvd? possible?
Hi.
Anyone know if it is possible to run windows 10 from a dvd?
I know you can do it on a sd card, but I cant find any info on the net regarding my query.
I do not want to create a windows 10 installation dvd. I want to do this:
Instead of having windows running from my harddrive, I want to run it from a dvd disc.
Thanks

It needs to be installed on something which means a HHD, SSD, USB ect
As far as I am aware its not possible to run directly from a DVD
If you know it works from an SD card why not just use that out of question?

Can't do that because if any data needs to be written it won't be possible on DVD....you can run it off a USB (3.0 usb) would be best or portable HDD.... as James said.

^^Agreed. High speed read/write is crucial for running an OS.

Thanks for all your replies/help
You have answered my query & I searched the net for a long time and nothing.
As always, aspkin crew to the rescue, thanks.
I will prob go for this when I save up some cash in a couple of months or less:
Price atm is £199 (uk)
Read speed: up to 275 MB/s
Write speed: up to 100 MB/s
USB 3.0 adapter included
James... the reason I wanted to boot from a dvd was because I had some stupid idea to run windows from a dvd and have my storage on an encrypted micro sd card.
Meaning no hard drive in pc so if anyone wants to take my pc, there is nothing on it!!!..... micro sd card will have magically 'disappeared' so that will be that.
ATM my pc harddrive is fully encrypted, but that looks suspect and also one can be forced to give out the password.
I also was smoking some strong dope so maybe some paranoia has kicked in and I want top security, but its good to be paranoid to a certain extent.
Anyway, with the micro sd setup I want to do, if anyone comes to take it my pc, I can tell them have it, it does not work, there is not even a hard drive in it etc.

There are tools that lets you build "portable" versions of Windows targeted for non writeable medias such as DVDs. However, setting it up is not easy, and the functionality of the resulting "portable windows" is very limited.
Here's a good start if you want to try and play around with it: Win10PE SE Web Page

I was thinking that putting a micro sd card into a usb reader is sort of the same as a flash drive/ssd, like sort of.
Same process you do to install windows on flash drive is the same(ish) process if installing onto micro sd.
Reason I prefer to go for micro sd is its easier to destroy/set on fire/eat/transport or whatever coz its so small.
The particularly one I have chosen is waterproof and has a 5 year guarantee.
Waterproof handy as one can just leave it in ones mouth if need be.
Also as its small, eating it as a last resort will be no probs.
Sounds like I am up to no good but I am not.
Recently in UK they got some new snooping laws and I dont agree with any of it and I feel people should be entitled to a private life as long as they are not hurting anyone.
Also, if burglars/thieves steal my stuff they wont get any of my personal info
XxX

Here's an idea that I'm working with:
Install Ubuntu on your main. PC. It's a free software. Then, install Virtual Box, this is also free open source software. Install Windows 10 on to Virtual Box, and save the Windows 10 virtual file on to your external drive or whatever. You can encrypt that. Run Windows 10 from your virtual box. If someone steals your laptop, and assuming you still have your external drive, then nothing!

P.S.: if you go for a "edible" one, chose Linux Mint... it's fresh!!

While we are on this topic, have any of you heard of SARDU?
I used to play around with it a few years ago. One of the coolest pieces of software I've ever messed with. It allows you to put TONS of bootable OS's on a single flash drive/sd card or whatever you use.
I used to have bootable Windows 98 on a flash drive. Useless as an OS but great for messing with people. You'll get some strange looks running Windows 98 on an Alienware PC.

There are much better solutions, like using a VPS server, that you access via VPN. And inside that VPS, you setup a TrueCrypt harddrive for your sensitive info, and no one ever will find it. And if it will be found - it is impossible to crack it.

The problem with TrueCrypt is that its not been updated for over 2 years now and there are a few security holes in it

To be honest, none of those security holes are severe enough to break the encryption, and I still use it today.

When I inserted a blank dvd-r inside of my pc it gave me an option to use it as an SD. I installed what was needed, and it worked like a charm, now as far as booting windows 10, this site says it's possible. Here's the link:

I generally do not think it is a good ideat to use DVDs or CDs for this purpose. Hard Drives or memory sticks are much more reliable.

You guys should check out Windows To Go.
It's a feature built into the Enterprise version of Windows 8 and 10 that allows you to run Windows directly off of a USB device. You can still use it without an Enterprise version of Windows as well Quote:
