If the masks were unlimited use, sure. As they are produced and distributed, they are also used up and discharged. Especially with medical professionals, probably going through a dozen a day.

how do we know which person in the world needs one? We can't predict who'd get sick. Young healthy people might be sick and never know it. Doesn't hurt them, but hurts others around them.

But again, while production has ramped up 20X, it's not something that can keep increasing, if it can even be sustained at that pace, for the reasons I mentioned. It literally CAN'T keep multiplying. I'm not sure how long it can keep up this current pace to be honest.

They are running out of the material to make the masks, and you can't just increase production of that. It will take MONTHS to setup manufacturing before production increases. Making masks is actually a very complicated process. It might look easy, but it's not. We are talking about a product that can keep out something as small as a virus...

my area has had quite a few.... even people my age. Good thing I'm a bit of a recluse and don't have many friends anymore lol. Since the, umm, election...

I doubt I'll personally know someone that dies, or maybe even get sick (with knowledge they are sick). Tho my best friends sister in laws uncle just died?

The poor probably aren't very concerned with a mask
I don't want one(as of right now) because I'm just staying away from people.

I'd say 25% of Americans, or less, will want a mask. Just a guess... who knows.

Most of my family would probably be considered far right republicans. And trust me, they think this can be serious. The hoax claim was specifically about what they were saying about trump and his handling of it and everything they said to make him look bad. Trump was already calling for border closings and was pissed off the plane with sick people was let in, and etc etc, long before anyone heard the word "hoax".

Although I'm completely devoid of interest in politics of any kind, I have a particular affinity for him.

I like this type of graph, that shows we are nowhere near any sort of exponential growth. In fact, the expansion rate appears to be slowing. (for now, but I bet all the new testing capabilities for us will increase it some)

The red line is 1, which represents consistent/same growth
Between 0 and 1 is a decline
Above 1 is an increase(2 would be double, for instance)

A microbiologist from the University of Hong Kong is calling for people who don't wear face masks to be banned from using public transport.

Meanwhile on the other side of the world the government is trying to tell us there's no need for people who aren't sick to wear masks. So who's right? Maybe this guy is just highly invested in the face mask business?

I think it’s very much a cultural thing in that a lot of Asian cultures do believe that the masks work whereas here in the west we don’t believe it as much. The scientific evidence can be interpreted to support either argument depending on what it is they’re trying to prove

Being that it’s not an airborne virus you’re much more likely to contract the virus through touching something and then touching your face so the masks will be somewhat limited as a preventative measure.

For those that have contracted it already however if they are coughing on something the mask will catch those particles and stop the virus spreading. Even better than wearing a mask that would be for those particular people to just not go out the house

Maybe exponential doesn't mean what you think it does?

Exponential would be something like...
4,000 cases/day
8,000 cases/day
16,000 cases/day
32,000 cases/day
64,000 cases/day
128,000 cases/day
256,000 and so on (or even worse)

A simple doubling of daily cases.

NOT
15,000
16,100
17,000
18,000
18,900

The deaths are surely rising, but at NOWHERE NEAR an exponential rate. Thank God!

It's showing whether or not growth is exponential.

If the numbers are along the red line, which is a factor of 1, it means cases are consistent. Growing by the same amount each day.

If the numbers were at 2, it would mean a doubling of cases everyday.

When it's between 0 and 1, there was a decline in cases that day, compared to the previous day.

So, even though the number of deaths are usually greater each day, the PERCENTAGE OF GROWTH seems to be dwindling down. And that is a VERY good thing.

You just multiply the growth factor x the previous day's cases.

GF=1.33, then you multiply previous day x 1.33 to get that day's cases

What we DONT want to see is that number hovering up around 2

What we DO want to see is the GF number consistently going down towards 1, and then finally down to 0.

but how do the people that contracted it already, KNOW they did, unless they are the ones with obvious symptoms? People that are sick should probably stay home tho. But by the time you know you're sick, how many people have you infected?
