Yup, makes me wonder why we just don't live overseas and rent. I mean the rentals are like 1/5th of the property taxes, and property taxes is perpetual, meaning forever. I don't even see how that is defined as ownership.

I pay $2400 a year or so for my apartment and that is for local services (bins collection, pavements cleaned etc) and that’s it as far as tax for where I live goes.

Didn’t realise it was so so high in the US.

Bills are approx $300 per month all in. So $3600 a year total.

Most of that is the council tax.

Closest thing here is sales tax which is nowhere near as invasive as VAT is for the UK. I mean they just started applying sales tax to online orders in the US in the past 2 years. Before that we could buy anything we wanted online and pay no taxes at all unless it was imported and the shipper declared a value over $800. In cases where the value actually is over 800 the shipper underdeclares and still nothing is owed. Import taxes for online sellers are virtually nonexistant and easily avoidable. The state of Florida still has 0 online sales tax due to the massive number of international forwarders in that state (only logical reason I can come up with).

My understanding is that in the UK you're taxed at like 20% for everything you bring into the country, whether you're a business or an individual.
Even to stack silver in the UK you have to pay VAT whereas formerly monetary precious metals are not taxed in the US.

Fast food in my area has a tax of 10%.. trying to discourage fatties from eating fast food all the time. Most sales tax in my state though is closer to 3%.. judging by my recent walmart receipts. What's VAT % and what is its scope?

@phaz, Im assuming you filed for tax exempt as a business on ebay and amazon and do not pay any state taxes on purchases still?

If not, I would consider it if you buy on those platforms. Also, state tax on internet sales is only for major platforms. Buy from a private website that doesn't have a physical presence in your state and still no tax.

So import rates will differ from item to item

If you are business yes you pay VAT on imports and domestic purchases but you can then claim it back so its a nil rate overall.

Quite a few items are also exempt from VAT - Food is one of those categories although if you are eating in say a restaurant its a 5% rate. Any foods or drinks bought at a supermarket is 0%. Only exception is high sugar drinks which have a 'sugar tax' which is an extra 18p (approx. 24 cent) per litre. Same principle as what your doing in the US with fast foods.

I'm not tax exempt. Mailers and tape are about the only business related purchases so I'm not sure if it's worth the trouble. How does one go about applying for being exempt from sales tax as a business?

That's nifty and I wasn't aware of this. I give it a few years at most before the new internet sales taxes are mandatory regardless of venue/website. Shipping supplies usually cost more off of eBay anyway since the death of sunuku.com.

Not bad. Mine is about 600 per month in bill. How much per month on that 120 sq meter apartment?

I found this Youtube video where this guy figured out all the taxes we pay in the USA. Hidden and or out front taxes on all goods, everything, it came out to be 65% of your pay check goes to .GOV.

I did it about 3 years ago, since I sometimes purchase $50,000 a month on there. Saves me a shiit ton of money every year.

Not sure if mailers and tape are worth it, like you say... regardless, here's the link. Scroll down this page a bit until you see "eBay's Buyer Exemption program for sales tax"... https://www.ebay.com/help/buying/pay...chases?id=4771

When I lived in Taxachusetts my effective tax was 68% I would guess most middle class in that state paid much more.

The city of Leominster Massachusetts wanted me to pay Personal Property Tax on INVENTORY in my retail stores. It was $38.00 for every $1000 retail value. They were estimating my inventory at $1,000,000 at one single location and sent me a bill of $38,000 estimated tax Of course I did not pay such thing. They got a local ordnance to suspend my business license and occupancy permit until I put in POS system so that they could tax me. Of course owning my real estate I told them to Phuck off but sold all my assets and moved away within a couple years.

That is what the whole nation is coming to if Americans dont start to stand up. Canada's recent actions should open every westerners eyes.

Just looked into it and my state requires a retail license which I've never bothered applying for. So I went to the state website which says I should have had a retail license before selling anything online from this state anyway.

It's too insignificant of an amount to to bothered by it for now. $50 at most.
