Re: VPN vs New Router vs What? Quote: |
So I live at my gf's place and she has a ****ty router/modem "thing". It's an Arris TG862 and apparently can't change mac address's, so I can't use more than 1 ebay at the moment.
| That is an all-in-one modem. Not very good for stealth or changing IP's.
With that current setup, you will not be able to change IP (unless you're able to put it in bridge mode).
What you can do is request your ISP exchange that all-in-one modem for a standalone modem and get your own Wifi Router.
I also have an Arris modem (mine is the Arris TM602G model). I use it with a Netgear N600 router. I can easily change my IP by modifying the last 2 octets of the MAC and then rebooting my router. What is cheap to you? The N600 costs ~ $60 or so, maybe cheaper on eBay. You can certainly go cheaper, but you will sacrifice a bit with speed & quality. Quote: |
and when I change the mac address am i guaranteed i won't get the same one again?
| Depends on your ISP. If it is one of the big ISPs (Comcast, TWC, AT&T) then the chances of a repeated IP are slim, but not impossible.
This is why it is suggested to keep track of your IPs on a sample spreadsheet (search the forum by ones provided by JamesNorth101). Dongle, Tethering, dial-up.
