Default A way to remotely reset modem instead of manually?

Hey guys,

I have question. I have a large house and I have a dedicated "electronics" room in my basement. I have every Cable Box, Blu-Ray, Xbox, Router, Cable modem neatly organized into this room. And everything gets sent via IP Repeater or direct wired through the walls into this room...

I currently am changing the MAC address using a NETGEAR router. I then have to walk into the basement and push the cable modem reset button. This is a hassle but if its my biggest problem then things are good in life...

My question is, is there a way to manually reset my Cable Modem after I change the MAC address so I don't have to walk down to the basement everytime? Its a Motorola Surfboard. Thanks and yes I'm fat and lazy.

Read this Remote Power Off Switch thread.

I bought that IP Switch and works great. Timing is very important to get it right. I can control a modem from another continent without problem.

JamesNorth101 posted a solution to this, it involved a remote control and a remote plug into the wall with the router connected to the plug. Use the remote to turn the plug off which in theory is the same as resetting your router

GoteBay got there first lol

I purchased a WEMO switch, it's an out let that is controlled by a free App

I plug that in the normal outlet and than plug the modem in the WEMO

I now have complete remote access

Like you I also have a netgear router and comcast modem in my basement with one PC

And up stairs in my office, I have a laptop, connected to my flat screen and my iPad mini and iPad Air

I now control everything through my I pad air , using logmein I'm able to access my laptop and my PC in the basement

Just makes things easy especially when making accounts , I'm able to copy on spreadsheets on my iPad and paste right into my PC through logmein

Now to switch IP no problem, I just control either my PC or laptop with logmein from my iPad and go to router settings

Change my IP , and before I click apply, I make sure to have WEMO OPEN

And than I'll click apply on the router

And a quick off and on with the WEMO switch , which resets the modem and , within 30 seconds, I'll go to IPVIEW app on my iPad and I know if I have a brand new IP instantly and if it's not a new IP I'll need I just click the IP on the app which copies it

Go right to my spreadsheet with my IP log and click find, and once they match with the account I'm on I'm ready to go

So nice being able to operate 5 devices all from one nice touch screen

I must say the I pad air really kicked things up a notch from the previous processor and everything is much faster connections much stronger which makes all these remote access much easier

Why you have to reset the cable modem?????? Once you changed the Router MAC the IP also changed by the time your Router back online

The modem needs to be reboots to send a change of mac address to the ISP to get a new IP address. The modem thinks, you changed equipment because of the new mac address.

Since the reservation of the previous IP address was still tied to the old mac, you cannot get it back until the lease is over.

Wemos seem good.

I have proven experience with Remote IP Switch. I remotely control my computer in USA from Canada like a charm.

My modem needs to be reset to pick up a new IP, I tried all different ways.

The router all I need to do is change the MAC and click Apply , that's it, no messing around with the power or reset buttons , once I hit reply it's resetting the MAC and I immediately witch off than on in the WEMO App which resets my modem by visiting the power and than turning it back on

30 seconds and a new IP

All equipment and ISPs work differently

I remember in the beginning I was told in order to do this I would need to take all the cords out of the modem , let it sit for 2 minutes, and also to take the power cord out of the router , this was taking me a long time to reset everything

So little by little I ended trying all different ways and the way I described is the fastest and no wire disconnects at all, but that is my system

So modems will change IP with a simple off and on switch
