When you connect to a website, you're going through about 10-20 servers until your request gets to the destination (eBay) and then back to you. Something like this:

Server 1 can see your MAC address, because it's a direct device to device connection, but Server 2 until eBay can't. eBay could only see the MAC address from Server 20, in the above example, because they're directly connected to it. And that's not you.
