Default eBay reading emails?

Hi,

I've been out of eBay a while and have just come back and noticed a change.

In the old days if a person emailled you through eBay you could reply in your client (i.e. Outlook) and it would go straight the the persons email address.

I now see it goes to a xxxx:members.ebay.co.uk etc

Is this because eBay are now monitoring these emails and I shouldn't put please pay me with Google Checkout etc?

Thanks!

It makes it easier for them if they wanted to, but the main reason is to make it harder to sell to someone directly outside ebay.

I had thought that but it is on every email I get (I've had well over 200). Do you sometimes see the email address then?

nowadays, anything before sale is anon, it goes via ebay to the potential buyers e-mail.

when the sale has been made though, normally you should be able to to get the actual email address when responding.

Hi oompaloompa,

Thanks, do you know if that is so eBay can randomly check the emails or is it to stop someone saying "go direct to this link and pay"?

I always do my sales through eBay but ask customers to pay with Google checkout crap pal has had enough money out of me! And am just asking as I don't want a suspension.

as with everything, its unlikely you are ever checked upon, unless there is cause to, eg suspicion..manual checks are the killers for ebay and paypal accounts

The same for Amazon for that matter. It's when buyers complain directly, then they check you out thoroughly.

If you are using GMAIL, just click on "show details" on the email, if the ebayer has not clicked "keep email private" you will see their actual email address in the reply-to field, not the xxxxxx@ebay. Works for me all the time when conducting business transactions outside of ebay. I just email them directly to the email address shown and use the FORWARD function so they still see all of the ebay stuff.

I'm not sure but Auctiva shows ALL the email addresses after the close. But I'm not 100% on that. I will start watching from now on.

Hi, Outlook shows all the email address after the sale however, I'm wondering if there is a way to see prior to the sale (i.e. ask seller a questions whilst the listing active).
