Is Changing Internal IP # enough???

Having a real problem figuring out how to change IP. Changed "internal IP", that look like 1xx.xxx.1.xxx to last three numbers xx3.
those changes show up on ip burger but the main IP stays the same.
Not sure if that is enough of a change, but don't seem to be able to change the other number! Is that enough of a change? tks, tmon

mr888 10-09-2010 06:27 PM

lol no its not enough, that's just your local network address, what kind of connection are you using? cable? or wireless dongle

tommymon 10-09-2010 08:57 PM

dsl with linksys router tks

archshot2k10 10-10-2010 12:21 PM

Are you using a cable modem or DSL? Are you using a router?

imjustme 10-10-2010 12:31 PM

Try this:

1. Open MS-DOS.
2. Type ipconfig /release and hit ENTER.
3. Wait 3-5 seconds.
5. Type ipconfig /renew and hit ENTER.

Check to see if that worked. If not, try restarting your router, that should give you a new IP (almost) every time.

tommymon 10-10-2010 12:37 PM

dsl and Linkys router. have tried with router in place and bypassing router.
tks, tmon

Tried the ipconfig thing to no avail.

Tried restarting router...nothing!

Your ISP might have a static IP assigned to you. Try calling them and asking them about giving you a dynamic IP.

tommymon 10-10-2010 04:27 PM

when I check it on ipburger and other ip site they say it is dynamic!?

jamblix 10-10-2010 05:03 PM

I think I've got the same setup as you.

Just go to 192.168.1.1 in your browser that should take you to your Linksys setup.

Type admin as your password which should be the default. You can leave the user name blank.

Once inside the router setup you should see MAC address clone in the Setup tab

Change the last two letters/numbers in the user defined entry, if it's something like C5 change it to C6 or whatever you want. Clink save settings.

You'll lose your internet connection. Now go to your modem, unplug it for 10 seconds and plug it back in. Do the same for your Linksys router, unplug for 10 and plug it back in.

Once everything is reset, you should have a new IP address.

I appreciate your input, but my wife and I have tried that and a ton of other methods to reconfig and we have not had any luck yet. we have tried bypassing the router and doing it that way and tried many different suggestions from the IP forum and all over the net for about a week...time for dial up I think??? tks tmon

Yours is dynamic but it's a long lease. Can sometimes be very difficult to change. I'll look for the definitve thread for you.

It is doable :peace:

What internet connection service are you using roadrunner or what? I heard some make it difficult...

tommymon 10-11-2010 11:14 AM

We use Embarq/Century link...the names keep changing. tmon

I suggest you get a cable modem, and lose the router. In order to run a flawless operation you need to be able to retain the IP to switch between accounts. To my knowledge you can't through a router. If you got more than one PC, just get multiple routers. It costs a little more, but it's worth not having the hassle, and less chance of screwing up.

hpcpqcsco 10-11-2010 11:42 PM

Some DSL company have dynamic IP but it won't change at all. I have AT&T U-ver (spell) and the IP never change for two years, have call them like 20 time to get help to no go :-) I unplug the modem or 2 days still would change at all. I gave up and order a cheapest Cable to do eBay stuff and the ATT for downloading :-)

You are not using a router to change macs/IP? What are you doing with cable modem to get/control IPs?

tommymon 10-12-2010 02:14 PM

We have tried with router and bypassing router. We have done whatever the instructions say, in terms of turning of, resetting or whatever we are instructed to do!
So far nothing works! tmon

I have Apple Airport Extreme so I cant change ip address either. I even tried connecting straight to modem and ip /release and ip /renew didnt work. Maybe the reason was because of my vonage. I guess I'll have to get new router.

It would seem you guys are on a static provider. Or at least one that renews rarely. It would be a lot less hassle to change providers. Unless you have some sort of contact just switch. Doing this thing with a static IP is just not workable

tommymon 10-13-2010 07:36 AM

Ours is dynamic, and yes we have a contract, so it still looks like dial up!

Pasicel 10-16-2010 10:03 PM

I was having a hard time as well, and i was looking around on how to speed my internet connection VIA Internet Protocol Version Inputing a DNS Server. I just did this 10minutes and it changed my Ip Address. Btw im using Vista.

I see you have a mac and changing your ip on a mac is a different ball game but you can do it. How to Change Mac IP Address | eHow.com

Or watch a video-
it also depends on your osx version.

If you just get another router: dlink, and netgear work well with a mac.
