I guess would depend on the items - I am not usually that bad unless it was something exclusive and insane.

I might be tempted to see how to block you from arriving in the first place =P ha

GTB 04-11-2012 09:35 AM

running over pedestrians yup, thats rsot lol

rsot 04-11-2012 09:45 AM

That's your expertise GTB - I learnt it from you the master ha

GTB 04-11-2012 09:50 AM

He-Man....master of the universe of pedestrian knocker over'ers

i have the power,burkkkksshhhskkshhh

Sandy D 04-11-2012 09:58 AM

Now I know why I have a need to carry a taser with me.

GTB 04-11-2012 10:00 AM

LOL thanks

rsot 04-11-2012 10:01 AM

That was a good show - a pretty strict view of society in He-Man - either you were muscled, strong and smart or you were a weakling and pi$$-a$$ poor ha. And if you were fair-skinned, you tended to be good - any other colour...well...you were evil.

GTB 04-11-2012 10:03 AM

He-Man was ace when i was 5 years old

Skeletor was a knob wasn't he lol

oompaloompa 04-11-2012 10:06 AM

I do not rummage much, but I have found a few items at charity shops in good areas, now though I noticed they are running them alot more like businesses and charging more for items. remember when marge from simpsons found that chanel suit???

rsot 04-11-2012 10:18 AM

@GTB, I got frustrated watching the bad guys fail every episode - I mean cmon, cut them some slack ha

@oompa, I remember that episode - she ended up in high society and need to find another one...sign of the times.

Sandy D 04-11-2012 10:30 AM

Speaking of shows.

I think the shows like storage wars, sw texas, pickers etc have caused the prices of everything to go up.

I like the shows and learn from them but when Mike found a pottery jug with a chip on it and said it would sell for 300.00 it told me he is totally lost.

I know my pottery and no way in hell would he ever get 300 for stoneware jug with a chip.

One of them also have a Tonka truck in the original box from the 1960s and said it would bring 400. Dont think so.

These shows are perfectly timed during a down economy and people have fallen for "your stuff is worth a million" crap.

What you say you can get and what you get for an item is two different things.

GTB 04-11-2012 10:30 AM

i cant remember it too well rsot:pout:

but yeah, more realism never goes a miss

transformers & thundercats was great too

rsot 04-11-2012 10:34 AM

80s was a good era.

@Sandy, yes the shows are throwing folx off a lot.

GTB 04-11-2012 10:35 AM

80s yup:amen:

This used to be my mindset.....

Then one day I came across some toys that I knew I could sell. The girl at the garage sale was very nice and her prices were dirt cheap.

At the time, I was broke so I still haggled with her. Trying to bundle things and get a lower price by a couple dollars.

She was giving it to me but I could tell that she didn't feel right about it.

Honestly, walking out of there I felt like an idiot. Everything was just a dollar here and 50 cents there. Why was still talking down? So stupid and honestly it was a little rude.

This was quite a while ago though and now if I see something good for cheap I just take it. Sometimes, just paying the prices is a good way to build rappor. If I wasn't being so greedy I would have stayed longer and picked out more items cause I would have felt more welcome. I probably would have taken all of them and made a killing.

Do you remember the title of the American Pickers episode? If so, I can tell you if that Tonka truck was worth $400. Some Tonka trucks from the 60s can most certainly be worth more than $400!

Sometimes their prices are right on the money. For instance, their toys and figurines are usually good.

But I agree with you on the pottery (although admittedly I don't know anything about jugs). He goes crazy with those jugs that I can't imagine a collector wanting.

What price would you put on that jug w/the chip in it?

Also, those signs that are beat to hell. Who would want that? If they were in good condition sure thing! But rusted and the paint falling off? Yeah, maybe if they paid $4 for it. But these guys spend $100 on signs that look to be worth $20!

But you're right about people being deeply misinformed. Many people even put in their ads "As seen in Pawn Stars!!".

They are beyond cooky. Then there are the people that try to go out and do and find gold in storage lockers or thrift stores and try to resell it for WAYY too much. These people usually have no idea what selling on Ebay actually entails and have very limited smarts when it comes to vintage or antique items.

Maybe it will calm down after a year or so? Some of the shows are still fairly new. I'm sure after a while the news will get around that the price on it are ridiculous.

I can see rsot knocking us down to get to the table first.

Am I correct rsot?

Nobody's going to knock me down to get some items before me. That's no different then shoving someone in the chest... Most people won't take kindly to that. No reason why we can't just be nice, but I can bite back too.. Or go to my glove box if need be.

biggunn 04-11-2012 03:38 PM

P.S. I also like to carry pepper spray. Don't ever let anyone tell you that pepper spray is for girls. I'll take on 5 heavy-weights with my can of Mace.

GTB 04-11-2012 03:42 PM

Yes I do.

I have bought storage lockers and did ok with them.

What I do is only bid to what value I can see and the rest is a risk of profit.

Any of the hidden items are profit from there.

And yes I have found some hidden gems in storage lockers along with some very weird surprises also.

A lot of work though.

The hubby got nailed with hit once from a couple of kids who ran a light and crashed into his truck. When he got out the kids got scared and hit him with pepper spray. Being a very large man he scared them to death and they reacted by using pepper spray. Only thing is it did not take him down and did not effect him getting a hold of the punk with the can of spray in his hand.

Food?

GTB 04-12-2012 10:28 AM

LOL good stuff

i can imagine why you say hard work, restoring or getting rid for the right price etc etc

Sandy D 04-12-2012 11:31 AM

What I do is sort the items, most places have dumpsters. anything I cannot make a buck on goes into the dumpster.

I always go back later with the DH or one of my nephews to do the heavy work if there is any.

I dont mess with clothing or cloth furniture at all.

I donate the clothing and cloth furniture if it is in good condition.

I am after the smalls, antiques, collectibles, older furniture (wood) etc.

I am going to start going to storage auctions pretty soon. I am so very excited to add another source to get items.

If you don't mind me asking, is there a range that lockers usually go for?

Sandy D 04-13-2012 07:46 AM

Here they would average 300-500 with some going up to 1000.

Depends on the size also.

10-20 go lower but those 20x20 or larger ones can hit 1000 or more

5 x 10s usually get 100 or so.

Seldom does one hit 3000 like on the show.

rsot 04-13-2012 08:06 AM

Bidding on the lockers - looks like fun at times.

Honestly with how cheap I am I always thought $500 or more was absolutely insane. Of course, it's hard to get a good feel of what exactly is in there when you watch on tv.

Sandy D 04-13-2012 09:33 AM

I only bid to the value of the items I can actually see. The rest is just luck of the draw.

I seldom have lost money using that method. I always look around and know what certain items will sell for and put a limit on the locker using that.

If there are hidden gems in the locker I will make some money.

One thing I have found is that most people who have decent stuff always are organized and clean. And most of the better items are always placed at the back of the unit. A dirty disorganized locker usually nets junk.

Sneakee 04-13-2012 03:41 PM

Sandy - May I ask where in the USA you live in? It's ok if you don't want to say. I'm just curious which state you are attending these auctions in.

Sandy D 04-13-2012 07:49 PM

There are auctions everywhere. Use auction zip dot come to find them.

Auctions are not limited to areas at all, in fact where i used to live we had a good auction I could attend every single day of the week.

Where I am now decent auctions are not every day like where I used to live.

But the thrift stores and flea markets make up for them big time.

Sneakee 04-13-2012 10:19 PM

Oh yeah I know those auctions are everywhere. I've been scouting them out for a while now and plan to attend one soon. I was more curious where you were from because I imagine prices of lockers vary depending what area you're in.

Like for instance, I know storage wars is just a show, but I imagine sometimes they go for so much because they are in California. Lots of rich people and high cost of living.

It's funny that you mention flea markets. I never find anything at those places. I finally ended up giving up but I might try again come summer. In my area the flea market is nothing but people who went to Goowill and bought things to resell there. Some even leave the price tags on the items!

Sandy D 04-13-2012 11:00 PM

Yes, prices depend on the area.

In the last place I lived I could buy a ton of lockers with little to no competition if the price got higher. Here, not so much.

The local economy has a lot to do with it as well.

I've heard that any big city produces high prices at the storage locker auctions because so many people are attending after those shows got popular. I think there are 3 now..

Sandy D 04-15-2012 01:54 AM

One of the best yard sales days I have had in a long time today.

The community sales were awesome.

Tons of great deals and tons of feedback builders.

Van was loaded to the max today.

People are hurting for money and selling like new items for next to nothing at yard sales.

Sad this is happening but if you are out and about the items are there.

Sneakee 04-15-2012 01:02 PM

Too busy to go to any estate sales this weekend :tears:

Week has been so hectic.

I did find a couple things at Goodwill though.

I found some Adobe Software and a Black Sabbath Record :hellBoy:

Sandy D 04-15-2012 06:11 PM

Black Sabbath.

Cool find.
