Default IP Address..

Hello people,

I'm apologising in advance about this. I purchased the ebay Stealth Book and i think its great! BUT i'm with Virgin, cable broadband. It has a Static IP, im connected directly to my laptop with the ADSL cable as i dont have any wireless equipment..

I can't change my IP, no matter what i do. I don't have the option to call Virgin as they're eejits.

I know dial ups an option for me which im prepared to do for the time being.

I just want to know which dongles are the best to use and how easy is it to change my IP address on them?

Thanks once again guys! I know its frustrating when there is users like me asking constant questions which have probably been answered a million times but i couldn't find my specific answer anywhere.

I hope that later on, i will be able to give you all something in return which may help you with selling etc, nothing special, just a link to my forum that i use for wholesale products, selling, business information etc.

Regards,
Emily

I don't know whether it will be cheaper- But if i got a wireless router instead would that have an affect? Just thinking of the best possibilities..

In post number 1, you state that you have Virgin Cable for internet, but then you say you have ADSL. Cable and ADSL are completely different things. If your IP is dynamic, that means it can change. Static IP would mean you are stuck.

So, figure out which you have (Cable or ADSL), then maybe I can give you a solution that doesn't involve a dongle.

Have you tried this one? http://www.aspkin.com/forums/ebay-tr...-your-nic.html

It has worked just fine for other people in UK with Virgin.

For that tutorial, you don't need to wrap your head around anything. Just do each step in order following the procedure exactly. Read post number 2 in that thread to see one item I mistakenly failed to include.

Cable IPs are rarely static and cost considerably extra. It is unlikely that you have a Static IP. If you are paying 175 to 200 pounds per month for that connection, you have Static IP.

Coolio, then, emily...... I'll call the cavlary for you!

vicvelcro: emily has a static IP with blueyonder which Virgin Media operate. Couple of points, the customer service is offshore & really stinks

x_emily_x, time to change your ISP, static IP won't do any good for stealth.

When you contact Virgin support, threat to cancel the account if no one answers or no where to escalate the issue.

If Virgin can not be any help, search other ISPs and get one. Then cancel Virgin.

Yep. Change ISP. If you'd said Blue Yonder sooner, I could have explained how they pipe your connection through one of their own webcaching servers which always appears to be a static IP and to all intents and purposes works just like that. Technically, your IP is what HFC specs defines as a private IP and the webcache translates into a WAN IP.

I still refer to UK cable providers by their original names. Telewest, Blue Yonder, NTL, and so forth. When you said Virgin, I wasn't thinking Blue Yonder.

Bummer. Well, back to the dongle thing. I can't make a suggestion on what provider to choose. I rank dongles and mobile service right down there one step lower than dialup. My opinion would be useless to you.

Emily, if you have Sky TV (although I doubt you do if you have cable) you can get internet for £5 a month, the IP changes every turn on/off.

Or, you have the option of using a broadband dongle....

I actually have one for sale on here

I think peoples experience with dongles relates to coverage in their area.

I am on BT Broadband and to change my IP I just reset the hub. Takes about 2 mins to fully reset. It does give you a different IP but this is within a "certain range". I also have a pay as you go dongle from T mobile for my laptop. I get about 3k out of it as opposed to 5-7 k on my broadband landline (the most my landline will currently support is 8k and its due for upgrade). I am also in a "bad reception" area for mobiles but I find this quite reasonable for a dongle.

I am told that 3 dongles are the fastest although T mobile are most popular.

I got the dongle new for £20 on ebay and it had £20 credit in it.

yh should do, you can check yourself, go to IP Burger - What is my IP Address? Find Your IP Address! check ure ip before disconnecting, note it down. Disconnect then reconnect check the ip again.

By the way are you using a pay as you go dongle ?

Default ip

You should just change isp to sky like im doing this week..apparently everytime you pull the router out from the mains you get a new ip with sky..i have 02 now and i been using hide my ip program. but if you are gonna be ultra careful you will need ip gold cos the gold version will find an ip to hide behind in about 100 miles radius of your address..otherwise the normal version will find you an ip in the states mostly lol anyway i could give you this lil tutorial that i have that will show how you can change ya ip manually lol
