Banned as a Buyer? Will too many return requests as a buyer get you in trouble?

I regularly buy Mobile Phones on ebay to resell. Unfortunately they are often not quite as described and even small discrepancies in the listing such as a tiny crack or a moderate scratch can have a big effect on the phones value. Sellers don't always list their phones with careful attention to detail and it's condition.

As a result I have to open a lot of item not described return requests. I will usually give the seller the option of a partial refund to reflect the loss in value (I am very fair with the amount I except and often only want to cover my losses rather than make a profit)

If they don't agree to a partial refund I will proceed with the return for a full refund.

I am wondering if my account may get in trouble with ebay if they think I am making too many return / partial refund requests to sellers. I'd hate to create a good income out of this only to then get banned as a buyer.

What do you think?

Please note I don't sell on this account at all is strictly only buying.

Yes I do. Oh no there is a tiny mark on this used phone I bought to make a profit on, I must punish the seller!

You're making totally incorrect assumptions because you have been screwed over by ****ty buyers. I am a seller on ebay too and I hate ****ty buyers just as much as you do! Read what I wrote I specifically said crack or MODERATE scratch. Yet you changed it in your mind to "tiny scratch"

9 of out 10 my purchases go without a hitch. A tiny scratch or a mark is no problem at all on a used device (obviously not if it's brand new as it should be the same as if purchased in a shop) I don't get out a magnifying glass or microscope to check for damage!

Bearing in mind I am dealing with amateur sellers most of the time (not professional ebay businesses) they often get things wrong.

Today is a classic example. I won a phone listed as OPENED NEVER USED.

This clearly means yes the phone has been opened and seals may be broken but never used at all.

And what do I receive? The earphones were a tangled mess (and the seller admitted they were used) the seller also admitted the charger was used.

I suspect the phone may have also been used as it had candy crush loaded onto it and as far as I am aware this isn't stock software.

So I asked the seller for a small £15 discount to make it up the lost value and the seller agreed. This is perfectly reasonable. The buyer I had for the device made a much larger deduction than this due to it's condition. The price the seller got after the partial refund was STILL ABOVE WHAT HE WOULD LIKELY HAVE GOT HAD HE LISTED IT CORRECTLY SO HE GOT A GOOD DEAL!!!

Do you think it's hygienic or reasonable to list used earphones as never used??? Do you think the sun shines out of all ebay sellers arses and they can never do anything wrong?

And yes I am buying it to make a profit so what? What I do with it is no ones business. If I was buying it for personal use I would still hold the seller to their description if it was for my use I might be a bit more lenient out of the need to save time and be generous but that is my choice to do so not an obligation.

Or the time I bought a phone in "Excellent condition" but a significant crack on the back was hidden by the protective case it came in. Do you think it's reasonable to list a phone as excellent condition when it's cracked and make no mention of the crack and not show it in the photos?

Try not to hate on buyers so much they aren't all **** although it's easier to only remember the **** ones.

It's unfortunate that sellers sometimes try their luck. For example they have a brand new phone and use it for a month then decide they don't like it so they put it on ebay. Do they list it as used and say "just 1 month old perfect condition" in the description? No of course not that's too honest so they list it as "opened never used instead" or "brand new" and then when you complain it's not new they say "oh well I've only used it a month it's exactly the same condition as new. Sure it is except all the seals are broken, the accessories are used, the protective screen covers are removed and the device may have slight signs of use. Other than that it's absolutely fine.

I am happy to take this course of action. If the seller doesn't respond I will escalate to a case. Amateur sellers sometimes ignore you thinking it will go away unless you open a case but sometimes they respond.

Re: Banned as a Buyer? Will too many return requests as a buyer get you in trouble?

you cant expect perfection on fleabay, you are looking for diamond in the rough.
else you would be g oing to a wholesaler who specialise in refurbished, open, returns.
Having said that, opening too many INAD cases is not a good sign.If Ebay gets involved, the seller performance gets dinged.
as long as you do not get Paypal or Ebay involved,I think you can keep doing it for a long time,

Re: Banned as a Buyer? Will too many return requests as a buyer get you in trouble?

there are cases where the buyer have his buying privilege suspended by Ebay(he can sell, just cant buy with that ID) FOR opening too many INR cases as he is deemed a hazard to the Ebay seller community!
Paypal would also shut down a buyer account if he opens too many cases, one buyer opens a new account with Paypal and start buying,he bought 16 items and immediately open INAD for 15,Paypal shut down his account

Didn’t read all that tosh above (not you agent, fernendo’s essay).
Typing stuff in bold capital letters will get you no fans here and instantly adds a large cock and balls to your forehead.

Opening cases damages seller accounts (and even buyer accounts when you take the p*ss like this). Especially when opening them against personal or casual business sellers.

I put it in bold to make it as easy as possible for you to understand the key point without having to read the whole thing.

Commenting on a post you admit that you didn't bother to read will get you no fans on here and instantly adds a large cock and balls to your forehead.

Or perhaps you did in fact read it but don't wish to comment on it as it proves you wrong.

Based on the stats of your account vs mine I can see I have been a member for longer and been far more helpful to others than you have. Respect your elders mate.

You could eventually get banned for too many cases, but if what you say is true, I don't blame you at all for opening the cases. Hopefully compared to the amount of purchases your do, the refund requests are a small percentage.

Why not open stealth purchase accounts?

I agree with OP.

Your "as new" isn't the same as my "as new" condition.

And especially if you are buying and re-selling. Any little defect can have a major effect on re-sale value.

I thinl this type of question is best to go on the Ebay Community Forum with all the righteous plebs on there, it's not going to win you any favourable responses on a forum with a large portion of members have been done over by buyers before.

I’ve been on 5 years and you’ve been on 6 so I’m supposed to bow down to you ? 😂 grow up.

With all your ‘experience’ you’d think you wouldn’t have to post such novice-like questions. Clearly not learned very much.

Carry on rubbing people up the wrong way sunshine.....🍆💦💦

It's a strange kind of person who sees themselves as a forum elder demanding respect when we're all nothing more that meaningless anonymous ID's.

Ignore them if you dont like their opinion. Unlike your refund seeking exploits on ebay, nothing to be gained here by trying to wear down someone who disagrees with you.

Your points are noted. Actually I consider us all equal and worthy of respect this was a snarky response to a snarky user that was offering no useful input at all and yes I agree it would probably be better to just ignore those kind of users.

Yes I should grow up like you and tell people their text adds a large cock and balls to their forehead because that is very grown up and mature. Especially adding the emojis that is the height of maturity.

Apparently it's not a novice question as no one of yet has an exact answer to it (I didn't expect one) and at best people are only guessing as it's not the kind of question with a simple answer.

I am a seller and have been for the last 10 years. I have also been done over by ****hole buyers many many times so I always try to be very fair to sellers as I put myself in their shoes when considering making a complaint. I hate giving sellers bad feedback and most of the time I let bad seller behaviour slide with no bad feedback I only give if it the seller conduct has been outrageous such as outright scamming etc.

Equally it's not fair to honest sellers if ****ty lying sellers get away with it. 90% of sellers are honest and accurate but some make up bull**** or are too to get extra money for their device or are too lazy to write a half accurate description.

Some people here are assuming I open an ebay case for every spec of dust I find on an item. As I have explained that is a totally bogus assumption but I understand you are only doing it out of trauma from ****ty buyers I understand we have all been there.

Thanks James I appreciate that someone understands where I am coming from. A seller might think a small crack is no big deal but the resale value can go from £100s to almost nothing from a crack and by not mentioning it they are getting far more for their item than it's market value.
