It's a matter of being careful about whatever you import into the UK. http://customs.hmrc.gov.uk/channelsP...ageImport_Home
Make yourself familiar with their expectations to reduce any grief for yourself.
To circumvent annoying HMRC, you need to make sure any excise is paid. When you research purchases, find out everything you can. Develop a relationship with the seller. Use a customs broker if you need. Advantage of that is they are a buffer, to a degree.
If you are that worried, check the media. Obviously reports of anything being seized could mean those items are 'hot' at the moment.
Use common sense about what you do and who you do business with.
