Question about how selling limits work

I know it is monthly, but how does it work?

Does it go item by item or does it do the month as a whole?

Meaning if I sell 6 out of a 10 item limit on the 5th of the month, will I get those 6 back on the 5th of the following month(one full month from the date listed), or does it just calculate the total for the month and reset at the 1st of each month?

it generally resets on the 1st of the month
