I sometimes buy $40,000-$50,000 a month on eBay, and return any damn thing that is significantly not as described. Such as you have explained.

Nothing has ever happened to my buying account, but I don't return as much as you seem to.

Try to find better sellers, or request more pictures from them. And communicate your concerns with them before the purchase.

That is excellent advice. I am sure if the OP does this they will have far fewer problems with their purchases.

Yes it is good advise unfortunately sometimes terrible marks / dents / scratches don't show up in photos due to light / shadows etc but I will certainly ask as many questions as possible.

OK so based on feedback from you folk my new plan is this. If a phone arrives not as described I will do the following without opening an ebay case:-

Offer them a partial refund agreement if appropriate

And / Or Offer to return the device at my own cost for a full refund

This is a good deal for the seller as they won't get a defect or have to pay return postage so I am taking a loss for their mistake.

If they ignore or don't agree only then will I open a case.

I think this is a pretty fair and reasonable approach as it will only cost the seller their time not any money or any defects and bearing in mind they have wasted my time I think it's a generous approach to take.

The furious foaming at the mouth trolls will probably find fault with this but I think it's more than fair.

One more thing to mention. People on here are saying how annoying it is that buyers open a case rather than contact them directly.

Ebay are almost forcing buyers to open as case as if you go to ask seller a question it says what about and when you say about an item not as described it automatically opens a case. It never used to do this you can to actually click on an "open a case button"

It's my understanding that the only way to avoid automatically opening a case is to use the other category which is technically the incorrect category.

I might be wrong on this though maybe someone can clarify? If I am wrong I'm sure the trolls will jump and the chance to shoot me down like I care lol.

You must have a good outlet to buy that many phones and not resell them on ebay so fair play .
I appreciate what you're saying but the words often and a lot need to be put in context.

Just for example if I purchased 100 phones per day on ebay and sent 5 back a day you could easily say I am often getting phones not as described and that I am opening a lot of cases but in the context of a percentage it's only 5% of my orders.

It depends if ebay rate you based purely on the amount of cases you open in a certain peroid of time or if they factor in what it is as a percent of your purchases. I supposed it depends on how smart their system is.

You'll never catch me paying for shipping back an item that was the seller's mistake.

Just as I, as a seller, would never expect a buyer to pay for shipping when the problem was my fault.

I understand that you're saying but there are 2 things to consider:-

1) It's in my interest to keep the amount of disputes / partial refunds I issue to be low to keep my account in good standing

2) If I keep on amicable terms with the seller I may be able to purchase from them again successfully in the future especially if they regularly sell phones

3) They may have genuinely missed a scratch or crack or not mentioned it as they didn't think it was a big deal. It's good to try and see things from their point of view especially if they aren't professional sellers.

4) If I continue making good profit I can afford to take the loss.

5) It's nicer and good karma to resolve things in an amicable manner.

You asked for advice and I gave it to you. You do you, though!

1. Buying accounts are a dime a dozen, so it doesn't even matter if it gets suspended. You just make another one.

2. Most regular sellers of electronics won't even negotiate a return through messaging. "Please start a return".

3. True, for non-professionals. I guess

4. That's your prerogative. I try to minimize ALL losses.

5. There's no karma on ebay. Look out for yourself, because no one else will.

IMO it's business as usual, it's the only way to eek out a profit from this low grade venture.
Luckily I don't need validation from anonymous people in an anonymous forum. Facebook and social media is the place people go to seek approval and validation (I only use Facebook for business) (before you ask no I don't sell the phones on Facebook..well I have maybe once or twice but the vast majority are sold to private companies)

I have actually posted in detail here because amongst all the trolls there is actually useful advise and perspectives.

My posts may be over the top but I like to be accurate rather than just senseless trolling without even reading the threads like certain members do.

I don't think returning something misdescribed for a refund is the worlds worst crime that you believe it to be. It's not exactly a holocaust in the making (unless you become prime minister and put anyone that's ever opened an ebay return case into concentration camps)

Yes I appreciate your opinion and I'm not criticising it.

1. Are buying accounts really 2 a penny? Won't my address / paypal account / credit card be blacklisted if I am banned?

2. Yes I am unsure how many sellers will be open to an amicable resolution. If they are smart they will agree as for the sake of argument even if my claim was false ebay would still force a return which they will need to pay for. At least my offer allows them to avoid return postage cost and seller defects

4. Yes I do want to minimise my losses but I also want to be fair for good karma and repeat business. A fair number of my purchases are word of mouth from happy sellers I have previously dealt with. Or a seller that gets hold of more phones and gives me "first dibs" on them.

5. Yes I know ebay can be a dog eat dog world. I get screwed over by buyers all the time but I prefer to be fair and like I said being a good buyer can get me repeat orders and more profit.

1. For the most part, they don't really care about the information on buying accounts.

Yes I see what you're saying they only really care about seller accounts.

That great news as it means I can buy 1000s of phones and make loads of bogus return requests I might buy every single phone on ebay, look at the phones under a microscope then create return requests because at 1000000 times zoom the atoms look out of place.

(only joking I am just troll baiting right now lol)
